Starting at 5pm on Comedy Central: "Undercover Brother." Racist or satire?
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 06:49 PM by ColbertWatcher
I think it's freakin' hilarious, but many other people have argued with me that it is too racist to be funny.

Watch and discuss.

And Neal Patrick Harris as Lance was pretty damn funny.

I hear they are filming a sequel.

5. "I hear they are filming a sequel." That would be awesome!
NPH was pretty damn good in this movie!

It's been a while since I've seen it, so I'd have to watch it again to remember by favorite part!

7. Now I remember my favorite part!
When the two women are fighting and suddenly there's a shower in the middle of the living room, where they move the fight and then it momentarily turns into a Cinemax!

8. I haven't seen it. It was directed by Spike Lee's cousin,
so I suspect that claims of racism may be misguided.

11. I had some time to kill and went to
a multiplex, and the only movie starting soon was "Undercover Brother". I had not intended before then to see it, and ONLY went to kill time. I loved it. I thought it was hilarious. I am a middle-aged white woman, which means I remember the 60's quite well, and loved the way that movie spoofed the era. I saw 'fros that made me nostalgic. I did not think it racist, but perhaps I'm not in a good position to judge.

12. I too am old and remember the 60's-70's...
... I love how it spoofed even the TV shows of the time!

I love when you go somewhere expecting one thing, have to change your plans, settle for something you didn't intend and get a pleasant surprise!

17. Was it T'ealc? - off topic warning
We don't have cable or TV. We've been watching the Stargate series on DVD. One of the final episode mentions "T'ealc, PI".

Your post made me think of that.

:D

21. It's satire.
There is no way on earth, however, that white people could get away with doing the same jokes. To portray white women as being black men's 'kryptonite', and blacks as being obsessed with fried chicken, holding insane conspiracy theories, and many others. The reason why, of course, is because people couldn't be sure if it was meant in jest or as a true reflection of their beliefs. But I think it's an interesting dynamic. White people, as the powerholder race in this society, have to be very careful, while other groups have much greater leeway in making fun of white people.

The movie was funny as hell, and one of those that I wonder why it isn't more well known. 'Conspiracy Brother' was my favorite.

23. I think any reasonably perceptive person can see that the movie has
a real and genuine fondness for the genre—and culture—it's parodying. It's as much loving homage as it is parody. Solid.
