Officials say bombing a 'suicide attack'

Neighbor says man called lawyers 'crooks'

Published: October 17, 2008 10:11 pm

Kim Sloan

Lloyd Cantrell told a neighbor lawyers are “just a bunch of crooks.” Shortly before 10 a.m. Friday, he threw a bomb into a law firm on West Crawford Street causing a horrific explosion in what officials called a “suicide attack” by a “depraved individual.”

Cantrell was killed, and four people were injured.

“It was the most horrible sound I have ever heard,” said Beth Thurman, who was working at a law firm across the street from the McCamy, Phillips, Tuggle and Fordham firm. “I ran to the door and I saw smoke coming from the building. You could see the windows blown out.”

The bombing was apparently the culmination of a simmering legal feud between Cantrell, 78, of 1180 Beaverdale Road, Varnell, and his son, Bruce.

“This is not an act of terrorism,” said Steve Sweetow, assistant special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). “It is a depraved individual, by all accounts, who decided to launch a suicide attack for reasons we are still investigating.”

2. "Not an act of terrorism"...
So suicuide bombers in Afghanistan and Iraq are "not an act of terrorism".

Or is it just when Americans do it?

3. The goal of terrorism is to inflict terror. This doesn't do it.
One man blowing himself up is a horrific act, but once he is dead without a movement, where is the terror of another attack?

7. He walked into an open law office and detonated himself
Would you have been terrorized if had you been in the waiting room waiting to see your lawyer when that happened?

10. It's like "going postal".
Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. This may well have terrified anyone inside, but to what goal? What coercion is implied by this act?

This man just lost it and decided to vent his anger in his last act out on the law firm he was fighting with. It is still a horrible act by a selfish man.

4. He must have been a Republican for
the ATF to immediately distance his attack with a 'this is not an act of terrorism'.

6. Not an act of Terrorism?
Seems a bit like one to me. Just replace the bomber with a Pro-Lifer attacking Planned Parenthood or someone who hates Dems or Repubs for that matter and bombs their offices.

9. I'd characterize it more like "going postal"
Terrorism has defined goals with the attacks. One man who went over the edge and decided to get revenge isn't really terrorism - It is an act of anger and insanity. Terrorism is normally rationale and planned out with a defined set of objectives. Take the abortion clinic bomber from Georgia - He planned out his attacks and even hid extra bombs to kill responding emergency personnel.
