Any arborists on DU? a challange
I called a "pro" to come look and prune my 4 year old apricot tree and she is a no show so far. I am not going to beg to pay someone, so if she doesn't show up today I have a challenge for any DUer willing to try. And full disclosure - I KNOW this tree is messed up, I want to fix it as best we can, that is why I wanted a pro and not to try to go by general do-it-yourself info and one workshop I have attended.

If we can do an "advise by photoshop" (where I send you photos and you use photoshop or just windows paint to show me where to cut) type of deal I will donate the money I would have spent to the Obama campain - or any other dem candidate of your choice.

What do you say?

17. Thank you so much!
I've been here for years and didn't look at the entire list of forums. Had no idea there was a gardening forum.

16. How do you feel about Partial-Sprout arborism?
Or are you only in favor of it for infest?

3. Not to jump in...
...but I have a vaguely similar problem, with a large tree in my front yard seemingly dying. It is a very large tree, that has been there for decades. I don't want to have to cut it down, since it is large enough to provide shade for most of the yard. But I definitely see large limbs dying, no longer growing leaves in certain parts.

Do you (or anyone else that reads this) know who I would call for a consultation on how to save the tree? I have no idea where to even look. I did some basic searching, but I mainly just found places that cut the trees down, not places that would come out and figure out the problem and try to salvage the tree.

4. try your county extension service and ask about certified arborists
or even the yellow pages. Landscaping companies might be another source but try to make sure they really know what they are doing - ask about training/certification - that sort of thing.

This is not a cheap service but saving a valuable tree may be worth it.

5. Call you county extension agent - yes even if you are in an urban environment you have one.
You can also call whatever state college nearby has an agricultural department - they'll drag the students out to your place to look at and fix your tree.

8. I third the extension agent
but also, it may not be a big deal if the limbs are shaded by other parts of the tree or by other trees.

9. Prune trees in winter/cold weather, when trees are dormant.
I have had luck with Sunset magazine pruning guide, other pruning books, and
also by googling tree pruning guide.
Lot depends on age of tree.

18. That is what I thought too, but she said

that doing it while it is growing would allow it to heal the cut wounds faster. Makes some sense, I guess.

I have tons of books and have surfed all over, but the bottom line is I am a big chicken. It's one thing to go butcher mesquite trees along a fence but this is a tree I bought. A FRUIT tree. In my YARD!
