LAY OFF HOOVER

HEY, John McCain: Stop bashing Herbert Hoover! That's the demand from Margaret Hoover, who tells us the Republican presidential candidate has been unfairly blaming her great-grandfather for causing the Great Depression. "McCain takes easy shots at things people can relate to," Hoover, a Fox News commentator, tells Page Six. "You expect the Democrats to use this narrative - it was a specter created by FDR and his hacks - but for the Republicans to do it is wrong. My great-grandfather did everything he could do to fight the Depression. I'd ask Sen. McCain to read his history books."

1. I don't even want to go there
I was going to take issue with "his hacks" but instead, I'll just watch one person who espouses job killing ideology beat up on another.

2. She has a point
I have always placed more blame on Do-Nothing Coolidge than Hoover. Coolidge's decision not to run in 1928 was because he saw the writing on the wall. His hands-off "the business of government is business" mantra enabled the rampant greed and corruption that led up to the crash. Hoover's greatest blunder was his handling of the "Bonus Army", not unrelated to the crisis by any means, but he was not guilty of inaction on the bank failures or other collapses. True, as a Republican, he was loath to take such measures - but he made efforts that were unprecedented in our history until FDR carried them further. Plus, FDR had the charismatic leadership qualities that Hoover the Engineer lacked.

Hoover allowed his ideology to trump his wisdom. Had he tackled the crisis with the same fervor and devotion as his post-war assault on European famine, things might have been very different. As it was, there is a reason that Calvin Coolidge became Reagan's favorite president - he was the original Teflon executive.
