NRA Ad: "Obama must be defeated" followed by gunshots
The sound made by the guns after the voice-over "Obama must be defeated" were from rifles.

I have never heard the sound of gunfire in any ad that wasn't a Public Service Reminder, not even from the NRA.

I am sorry that I don't have a link. I heard it on my local Progressive Affiliate station.

I hope some one saves all of their ads for 8 years from now and throw them back in their face.

5. I gave them up yrs ago when they supported cop-killer bullets.

15. How are you defining "cop-killer bullets"?
In general, there is no such thing as the myth would suggest.

Could it undermine the bullet proof vests of the period. Why did hunters need ammo that was brass and Teflon coated? What purpose did they serve, hunting?

22. Brass and teflon have nothing to do with vest penetration.
Teflon does nothing but protect the barrel of a gun. By the time the bullet has left the barrel, there is not much teflon left on it. It has no effect on vests, contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe.

Brass is meaningless, too. Full metal jacket (range/practice) ammo needs to be covered in something harder than lead; just about any metal will meet that definition

Two qualities of a bullet that matter for vest penetration are shape and speed. All center fire rifle ammo will penetrate vests designed to stop handgun bullets due to the speed of the bullets being orders of magnitude above what the vests are designed for.

Pointy bullets go through things better than non-pointy bullets. Handgun bullets tend to be round; rifle bullets tend to be pointy.

All fast, pointy, rifle bullets will go through vests designed to only stop slow, round handgun bullets. If you need to stop rifle bullets, you need to get a vest designed to do that (class 4), like many SWAT teams wear.

All normal hunting ammo is included in the poorly defined "cop-killer bullets".

I'm a harder Leftist that has guns too but not quite so many.

We actually had this conversation yesterday - we lamented the fact that so many of our comrades were woefully unarmed....

37. I successfully annoyed/disturbed a righty friend who proudly showed me his AK-47
I hoisted it over my head and shouted:

"THIS ... IS THE GUN THAT LIBERATES PEOPLE!"

He took it away in disgust as I laughed at him.

4. I think that oversteps the boundaries. In the present climate.
I'd try to get a recording of it. They'll play it again. You might even pretend to be a McCain supporter, and ask them to play it again.

8. Those pricks still phone me
I quit several years ago. Guns and hunting are no problem for me I have no issue with people that like to own and use firearms but the NRA has turned into a political arm of the RNC. I've asked them to quit calling, to quit mailing but they still do. I sent back the last 4 pre-paid membership envelopes empty and the shit keeps coming. I don't think the folks in the office are all that bright.

11. They call me at least once every couple months because:
a) My late father was a long time member;
b) My late father, being prideful, submitted my information to their Eagle Scout database.

So they call me every couple of months spewing their crap asking me to join.

In 2004, I told my dad exactly what I thought of the NRA:
"A democratic candidate could stand there with an AR15, two .50AE caliber desert eagles strapped to his side and a pump shotgun in a sling-back holster screaming, 'I LOVE GUNS! GUNS ARE AWESOME!', and the NRA would still give him a "F" rating and sponsor the republican candidate."

35. That is really it now and
exactly why I despise what they have become. They are not even close to a real advocacy group, just a political arm right alongside the evangelical churches IMO but that's a whole other discussion.

10. Here's the report from factcheck.org:
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/nra_targets_obama.html

NRA Targets Obama
September 22, 2008
Updated: September 29, 2008
It falsely claims in mailers and TV ads that Obama plans to ban handguns, hunting ammo and use of a gun for home defense.
Summary
A National Rifle Association advertising campaign distorts Obama's position on gun control beyond recognition.

The NRA is circulating printed material and running TV ads making unsubstantiated claims that Obama plans to ban use of firearms for home defense, ban possession and manufacture of handguns, close 90 percent of gun shops and ban hunting ammunition.

Much of what the NRA passes off as Obama's "10 Point Plan to 'Change' the Second Amendment" is actually contrary to what he has said throughout his campaign: that he "respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms" and "will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport, and use guns."

The NRA, however, simply dismisses Obama's stated position as "rhetoric" and substitutes its own interpretation of his record as a secret "plan." Said an NRA spokesman: "We believe our facts."

Apparently nobody ever told this spokesman that he's entitled to his own opinion, but he is NOT entitled to his own facts.

Also, snare drums are traditionally used in Classical Music to emulate war related themes.

the bullet points in your PowerPoint slide. (Pun intended.)
Given that NRA produced the add, of course you have gun shots somewhere in it. If GM had made the ad, it probably would have had car horns in it.

Given the events of the last week this ad struck me as being a bit...auspicious. But your point is a good one. Do all of the NRA ads have gun/gun-like sounds in them?

31. The NRA makes me sick.
They're not so much pro-second-amendment as they are anti-Democrat. They don't care if what they say is true or not, as long as they're bashing Democrats and other liberals.

And this ad is just horribly wrong. It creeps me out.

My great fear is that some nutcase will try something.

I think if they tried something and FAILED, mind you, it would turn this into an unstoppable landslide. But I fear for Obama's safety in this climate.
