"McCain!! McCain!! McCain!!! "- Shouted the lady in line at early voting in NC this morning.
She happened to be right in the door where everyone was voting. The poll worker said "Ma'am you are not allowed to campaign this close to the the polls." The lady said "I can do whatever I want, I don't work for his campaign." And then she again shouted "McCain!! McCain!! McCain!! McCain!!"

The poll worker said "Ma'am, see that sign out there that says no campaigning beyond this point?" The lady continued "McCain!! McCain!! McCain!!" The poll worker then very sternly said "Ma'am I am serious, I will have to call someone and have you removed if you do not stop!"

The lady then rather sheepishly apologized and kept saying "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

I was at my cubicle filling in my circles for Obama and a straight Dem ticket so by the time I got turned around the lady was gone. I think she left without voting. I so wanted to tell her on my way out that I just cast my ballot for Obama thereby canceling out her vote for MCCAIN!!!

The town I live in is small and very red. Why just this year we finally got the alcohol referendum to pass. The shouter was an elderly white woman that had the look of one that has never traveled far from NC.

I will be thinking of her with glee on November 5th.

4. Was her idea that she would convert a few last-minute deciders?
Did she think people would vote for McCain simply because they heard his name shouted in a polling place? How small is your town?

7. Asheboro NC - Population: 24,176
White: 76%
African American: 12%
Native American: 1%
Asian American: 1%
Other/Mixed: 10%

Males 49%
Females 51%

Median Income: $31,676 - (they definitely vote against their best interests)

An interesting fact:

Voter turnout for the primary was 29.74% - this figure is for the entire county (81,118 registered voters)

Voter turnout for the alcohol referendum was 55.17% - this figure is for Asheboro city because it was I dry city, not a dry county so only city folks could vote (12,205 registered voters)

They don't care too much about politics but they sure did care about the alcohol!

5. Repugs act like they're rooting for a high school football team
rather than considering the health of a nation. See how well it's worked out. I voted in Caswell yesterday (str8 Dem, of course!) and it was a lot more civil, but Caswell is 55% African-American and what's left is still pretty blue. So yeah, Mammaw Duncecap over by you already got herself a whole dang bunch of cancellations. Heh!

26. Yeah that's how fascists behave. It's all about "pride" to the evil ones
the rest of them are just ignorant and/or deluded. So sad.

6. I would have gone up to her after you voted and offered my hand for a shake..
and as she took it say: "I want to thank you...I have to vote early because I'm going to be out of town, and was still undecided until I heard you...so I voted Obama."

25. YES! And during the school year there is a constant flow of buses bringing
kids to visit the planetarium to expose them to science.

14. In Randolph County too - the poll worker told me the line yesterday
was very long - longer than they have ever had for early voting. This morning wasn't too bad because it was raining.

My coworker voted in Durham yesterday and waited an hour.

21. FYI: 60 Feet in NC
In North Carolina, if you are advocating for a candidate at a polling place, you must remain at least 60 ft away from the entrance to the polling place. That 60 ft mark is usually well designated, just so there is no confusion. In practical terms, this often means you can do a meet and greet in the parking lot, pass out a brochure if you want, but otherwise, you MAY NOT interfere in any way with voters.

This woman was clearly mental and not at all connected with either party (she'd know the 60 ft rule). It's gonna be a rough four years for her. I'm glad the poll workers put a stop to it.

28. Unfortunately, around here they'd be saying he was
uh ay-rab (sigh)

Caswell seems to be surprisingly enlightened, though. My partner and I were a little nervous when we bought a place out here in the country, not really knowing what to expect. We looked at places in Rockingham and Randolph Counties... y'know how you "feel eyes"? Rockingham County had a lot of junk cars and rebel flags -- no way in hell. Mind you, we're a couple of redneck-looking and sounding guys, raised in the country, very country ourselves, who just happen to be a couple. If y'didn't know, you might not know.

Except for our neighbor-lady here who somehow clocked me right away, which is pretty darn rare. And refreshing. We have very few neighbors, but they're Blue and very country/live-let-live/laid back, like us. Nobody freaked (well, me a little bit when none of our neighbors freaked that a gay couple moved in up the hill :D).

27. does she think that would actually help him gain votes ?
it would probably annoy people and those who are undecided or don't have a strong preference would vote Obama just because they are annoyed by her.
