A few stupid newbie posting questions...
1. How do you utilize "mark"? It seem whenever I click it, it "marks" everything.

2. What does "..." mean? Is it just a symbol for "I concur"(OSTTE)

3. Do my "bookmarks" expire? If so, how long do I keep them?

4. What is the best way to keep track of my older posts? How long do posts remain active? How do I know if I receive replies to posts older than 48 hrs?

5. Are there any unwritten rules/etiquette that I should know about?(This is the only forum I post in.)

Thanks in advance for any help directed my way.

:toast:

1. Kick
This is awkward, but I've been around for over 10,000 posts, and I don't know the answer to your questions. Looks as if you're doing okay if you've been around for 515 posts and haven't ticked anyone off.

Be nice, welcome newbies, when in doubt use spell check, and nominate wryter2000's posts for DUzy's.

3. What do "Mark" and "Mark All" do?
From the DU help feature, which you can access by clicking the question mark thingy at the top of the screen.

The "Mark" function helps you keep track of which posts are new. When you click "Mark" in a particular forum, all of the posts in that forum will get marked with a white icon, like this: . Any messages that are posted in that forum after you click "Mark" will be marked with a gold icon, like this: .

The "Mark All" icon marks messages in every forum.

Note: In order to use the "Mark" function you need to have the function turned on in your preferences. Click on "Options" then click "Edit your preferences" (or just click here). Under the section "Use MARK time stamp feature?" Select "yes" and then click the "Update" button.

6. hmmm
1) no idea..I have never figured out a use for this function
2) . . sometimes it's an oblique reference to a previous conversation.. or a long running joke... sometimes it's just a kick..
3) If they DO, I haven't hit the vanishing point yet. .
4) This option isn't available... I WISH IT WAS

5) There are so many that the only way to learn them is to run afoul of them.. but don't worry, most are not hanging offenses..

7. use Mark on threads or forums, not at the "Latest" page
.... is just something you put in the subject line so your response is in the message box. you can't have a blank subject line

I don't think the bookmarks expire

older posts are only available in the search area. As I respond I can't see if you have a star, but do the DU advanced search with your user name and choose "Big Forums-Conference" at the top of the pull down list, I don't like the Google search

you may find our DU Glossary both handy and entertaining

9. Unwritten rules ...

There are lots of unwritten rules, but if I wrote them, then they wouldn't be unwritten and would change, so that's out. Just kinda got learn that part by observation.

1) "Mark" from the Latest Threads page will mark all groups read. From inside individual groups, it will mark just that group read. I use it for small forums. It's mostly useless to me in the large ones because they move so fast.

2) Do you mean what is an ellipsis? Three dots? People use it in different ways on discussion groups. Its intended use is to indicate words removed in a quotation, e.g. "Four score years ago . . . ." People use it in other ways ... to indicate a pause in thought or pacing or ... something. I use it in my subject lines to indicate something comes after the words in the subject.

3) I don't know that there is a "best" way. In order to keep track of posts older than 48 hours, you either have to keep track of the threads or search for your username in advanced searches. It's easier to keep track in smaller groups. After 48 hours, forget it in the Big Forums.

4) I have no idea. I have bookmarks going back four years though.

5) Don't touch the butt.

Which really upset me(at first), because I am extremely liberal. I am just not a very good writer, nor am I an eloquent speaker. It is just annoying to be on such a liberal site, but to be judged on such trivial things.

12. 5a - All checks payable to Solly Mack?
Yes - just do it.

:)

4 - I don't have a good way for checking replies older than 48 hours old. I either bookmark a thread to begin with...or put it in my journal & check back. I also do a simple search for older replies. I will also put threads in my DU "favorites" folder...(and check back later)

3 - I believe I still have bookmarks stored under the old DU-Archives link. Haven't checked in a long while though. So I'm guessing bookmarks don't expire...the older ones are just stored differently. Course, they could all be gone and I just don't know it.

2 - I always take it to mean "I concur" (but I could be wrong)

1 - Mark scares me so I leave Mark alone.

1. The mark function marks everything in the forum you are in. I use it to keep track of activity in forums I am interested in. Should you click the mark function from the latest or greatest page, everything on DU is marked as 'read'.

on edit to add: When you are in a forum, take a look at that little thingie to the left of the thread title ( ). When you hit the mark button, it changes gray --> . Any new activity in a thread changes the thread icon to . If you look inside the thread, new replies will also have the same icon.

2. No clue.

3. Bookmarks do not expire.

4. The easiest way to keep track of your older posts is to bookmark them. Unfortunately, if you post a lot you will have a LOT of bookmarks which will rapidly become unusable. Once you hit 48 hours, posts will drop off your 'My DU'. One other possibility is to post things to your journal.

5. Probably the most useful 'rule' is to be nice to others. If you look in the detailed rules, there is only one highlighted sentence in the entire detailed rules. Find - heed it - we take it pretty seriously here.

18. Here's an entry for #5; n/t nt eom nm are all used to indicate there
is nothing else in the reply, everything is in the subject line. This is mostly a courtesy for people that have dial-up access so they don't waste time opening replies with no content.

Many people don't know (care?) this and put the abbreviation in the message body.

Unwritten rule; if you use this, put it in the subject line.

BTW, it stands variously for "no text" "no message" "end of message"

45. The most important unwritten rule
Do not post anything that is in any way negative regarding Obama's campaign until you have over 1000 posts. And do not post any polls that do not show a healthy lead for Obama. Technically, constructive criticism is permitted, but there is a rabid cadre of DUers wielding virtual pitchforks who absolutely revel in confronting posters who they see as trolls, in some cases literally reducing newbies to tears.
