The widow of the "friendly fire" victim Matty Hull appealed directly to President George W Bush yesterday for help in finding the truth about her husband's death.

Susan Hull, 30, said she met Mr Bush in November 2003 and he asked if there was anything he could do to help with investigations into the 25-year-old lance corporal's death...

Speaking ahead of the expected conclusion of the inquest tomorrow, Mrs Hull said: "To President Bush and the US government; we implore you to release the 11 lines and let the coroner have these today, so that our family can feel more satisfied with the transparency of this inquest.

"President Bush, this is the last day you can help us. We ask that you give the coroner just one single page."

Mrs Hull said that last-minute efforts by the Hull family's lawyers to secure the evidence had proved fruitless so she decided that she had "nothing to lose" in making a direct appeal.

The coroner backed up her request as he adjourned the inquest, Mr Walker said: "I was not quite aware that requests had been made to the US since April 2003 for this information and that's quite an appalling situation."
