4. Sorry, but not true
It was Robert Bork that did the deed.

6. Yes, but it's a Republican joke, mocking Democrats as exaggerating Gonzo's crimes.

8. Well, it's a minor thing, to be sure. But I'm trying to get the precise paralllels, and am failing.

9. Ok, see how this sounds
1. The Bush administration is as crooked as the Nixon administration:

Nixon, I believe via John Mitchell, fired Cox who was investigating Watergate

My joke was meant to suggest that Gonzales' acts are so despicable that it is easy to surmise that he would have fired Cox had he been in the Nixon Administration

2. The Bush administration's wrong doings are wide ranging

Who knows what else they have done that is shady at best, illegal at worst. Why they have been involved in such a wide array of secretive acts that it would not be surprising to learn that they were involved in this.

Obviously, Gonzales is too young to have been involved in the firing of Archibald Cox. That is what makes it hyperbole and ultimately, I believe, satirical. It draws parallels to a previous administration's wrong doing.

Cheers!
