I answered my own question below. By posting on how to post to my journal I managed to finally post to my journal.

Can other people still post in their Journals?
Why can't I?
I post and select "add to journal" and I get an error message, and I end up trying 10 times and unwittingly posting an article 10 times, but never to my journal.
What am I doing wrong?
What would I have to do to get this post, for example, to go into my journal?

I remember having this same conversation with a wingnut relative when the stories of why we went into Iraq started shifting, to divert attention away from the whole "mushroom cloud/WMD" lie.

I lived in the UK for four years and paid the same rate of income tax I do here - about 24%. As a temporary resident alien, I got 100% free health care (including most prescriptions, including contraceptives, though some medicines were about $8 per month), comparatively decent public transportation (though not free - still cheaper than driving, because they have massive petrol tax), safe streets (including cops who are largely unarmed), a superior education system (free through high school, still relatively "cheap" for university, although they now have fees courtesy New Labour, which I disagree with), etc., etc., etc.

What do I get here? Cheap (comparatively) gas, halfway decent roads (though these seem on the way out as the governments - both federal and local - become too strapped to maintain them and continue to sell "toll roads" - which are actually subsidies to foreign corporations, who will then demand tribute from us for the right of way - as the answer), and a GIANT military. That's it. Oh, and maybe, if you're lucky, a halfway decent public education comparable only to about the first ten years of its British counterpart.
