Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) may have donated $115,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, but he's still out defending one of the most vulnerable Republican senators in an op-ed in Saturday's St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Democrat Al Franken has accused Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) of not aggressively investigating war profiteering in his role - first as chairman, then as the ranking member - of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

But Lieberman defended Coleman, writing:

"As a result of Coleman's leadership, PSI has exposed more than $80 billion in fraud, waste and abuse in government operations. He identified multiple vulnerabilities in the Medicare system, which recently led to sweeping changes in Medicare to prevent scam artists from ripping off taxpayer dollars.

"With the Government Accountability Office, he pinpointed weaknesses in our nation's radiological licensing practices and brought about changes to help prevent terrorists from obtaining radioactive materials here in the United States. He also revealed the predatory practices of credit counseling agencies that take advantage of folks trying to dig their way out of debt. This effort ultimately strengthened efforts by the IRS to combat these abuses.

"Yet, despite the long record of PSI successes, some partisan critics assert that he should have focused the subcommittee's attention exclusively on Iraq. They are wrong."

2. Yeah, but what that asshole Lieberman studiously avoids mentioning...
...is how Coleman didn't go after the worst fraud in the history of this country, or perhaps even the world: the unconscionable war-profiteering and traitorous activities of companies like Halliburton/KBR and Blackwater. For that alone he deserves to be waterboarded, along with every member of those treasonous companies.

And yes, Franken can win. Norm is running scared; witness his weasel-like metamorphisis from attack-dog to "I'm not going to run any negative ads" guy. Just as he's done throughout his political career, the slimy bastard will say and do anything to get a vote. He sees Franken coming up alongside and passing him, and he's already got the pedal to the floor. How people in this state can't see through the scumbag Coleman is beyond me.
