A Dose of Reality on the ACORN Hysteria
A Dose of Reality on the ACORN Hysteria
By Zachary Roth - October 13, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/a_dose_of_reality_on_the_acorn.php

It's worth taking a moment to step back from the slew of charges leveled over the last week at ACORN, the community-organizing group that Republicans and the McCain campaign have been trying to turn into a bogeyman for fears about vote fraud (and, of course, tie to Barack Obama).

The GOP has accused ACORN of submitting fraudulent voter registration forms numbering in the hundreds or thousands, in battleground states including Ohio, Indiana, Nevada, and Missouri.

But the most important point that's getting lost in the Fox-generated hysteria is that, according to voting experts, even when fraudulent voter registration forms are submitted, they virtually never lead to fraudulent votes being cast. ...........

6. Yes, that's Kendrick Meek in Florida with McCain
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 02:44 PM by IanDB1
The beleaguered Democratic-leaning community group Acorn sends over this photograph: John McCain, in March of 2006, sitting beside Florida Rep. Kendrick Meek at an event Acorn co-sponsored in Florida.

The immigration event, which other photos show was packed with red-shirted Acorn member, was co-sponsored by the local Catholic Archdiocese, the SEIU, and other groups.

McCain, still spiting much of his party on immigration at the time, was the headliner.

Bertha Lewis, Acorn's chief organizer, said in a statement that came with the photo, “It has deeply saddened us to see Senator McCain abandon his historic support for ACORN and our efforts to support the goals of low-income Americans."

”We are sure that the extremists he is trying to get into a froth will be even more excited to learn that John McCain stood shoulder to shoulder with ACORN, at an ACORN co-sponsored event, to promote immigration reform," she said.

2. Also, organizations are required to submit ALL of the forms they collect.
They are not required to separate the good from the bogus as ACORN did.

4. Noone listened to our cries about voter fraud in 2000 or 2004.
Why should we listen to them now?

7. VIDEO: Feb 20, 2006, McCain tells ACORN they are "what makes America special."
FROM AMERICABLOG: http://www.americablog.com/2008/10/mccain-told-acorn-in-2006-that-they-are.html

A goldfish's lifetime ago, Sen. John McCain was happy to accept the honors and acclamation of the Service Employees International Union, People for the American Way, UNITE HERE -- and ACORN. Here he is, on Feb. 20, 2006, telling immigration rights activists at a rally in Miami that they "are what makes America special." ACORN co-sponsored the rally, and its volunteers surround McCain, and while there's no evidence that McCain ever formally teamed with the group, the video serves as a reminder that he did not mind being associated with them when the politics of the moment were different....

McCain had no trouble fraternizing with ACORN in 2006 when their political interests coincided with his. Now, his campaign is writing e-mails in his name bashing ACORN as a tool of the Obama machine.
Oops. Now watch the video. The good stuff, where McCain sucks up to ACORN as all that is good with America, comes at about 2 minutes in.
