Pig Out (please read DUers)
Edited on Fri Mar-16-07 07:12 AM by newyawker99
Please K&R if so minded DUers. The way we treat these sentient and highy intelligent creatures is just shameful. I have been inside factory farms a few times-they definitely qualify for the expression "hell on earth".

Pig Out

By NICOLETTE HAHN NIMAN
Published: March 14, 2007
BOLINAS, Calif.

WITH some fanfare, the world’s largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods, recently announced that it intended to phase out certain cages for its breeding females. Called gestation crates, the cages virtually immobilize pigs during their pregnancies in metal stalls so narrow they are unable to turn around.

Numerous studies have documented crated sows exhibiting behavior characteristic of humans with severe depression and mental illness. Getting rid of gestation crates (already on their way out in the European Union) is welcome and long overdue, but more action is needed to end inhumane conditions at America’s hog farms.

Of the 60 million pigs in the United States, over 95 percent are continuously confined in metal buildings, including the almost five million sows in crates. In such setups, feed is automatically delivered to animals who are forced to urinate and defecate where they eat and sleep. Their waste festers in large pits a few feet below their hooves. Intense ammonia and hydrogen sulfide fumes from these pits fill pigs’ lungs and sensitive nostrils. No straw is provided to the animals because that would gum up the works (as it would if you tossed straw into your toilet).

In my work as an environmental lawyer, I’ve toured a dozen hog confinement operations and seen hundreds from the outside. My task was to evaluate their polluting potential, which was considerable. But what haunted me was the miserable creatures inside.

They were crowded into pens and cages, never allowed outdoors, and never even provided a soft place to lie down. Their tails had been cut off without anesthetic. Regardless of how well the operations are managed, the pigs subsist in inherently hostile settings.
(Disclosure: my husband founded a network of farms that raise pigs using traditional, non-confinement methods.)

The stress, crowding and contamination inside confinement buildings foster disease, especially respiratory illnesses. In addition to toxic fumes, bacteria, yeast and molds have been recorded in swine buildings at a level more than 1,000 times higher than in normal air. To prevent disease outbreaks (and to stimulate faster growth), the hog industry adds more than 10 million pounds of antibiotics to its feed, the Union of Concerned Scientists estimates. This mountain of drugs — a staggering three times more than all antibiotics used to treat human illnesses — is a grim yardstick of the wretchedness of these facilities.

There are other reasons that merely phasing out gestation crates does not go nearly far enough. Keeping animals in such barren environments is a serious deprivation. Pigs in nature are active, curious creatures that typically spend 10 hours a day foraging, rooting and roaming.

Nicolette Hahn Niman, a lawyer and cattle rancher, is writing a book about the meat industry.

5. M.K. Gandhi:
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”

If only more progressives could understand this concept. It's not "either people OR animals are worthy of compassion" it's "people AND animals are worthy of compassion".

Nope. Tables and chairs aren't tasty and delicious. Animals most certainly are.

I completely agree. Industrialized livestock farming gave us Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis. It's only a matter of time until other such nasty surprises surface as a result of these practices.

I wish there were a local butcher in my area, I'd much prefer to purchase meat that was raised and slaughtered locally than buy from a grocery chain.

11. Puppy mills
"Imagine keeping a dog in a tight cage or crowded pen day after day with absolutely nothing to chew on, play with or otherwise occupy its mind. Americans would universally denounce that as inhumane."

They're called puppy mills and they exist all over the U.S. Unfortunately, we don't denounce that as inhumane. Thus, they continue to feed pups to the pet stores.

15. I think the point was more that
there would be more outrage about this being done to dogs (as there is over puppy mills among those who are aware of them), if it was as widely known as it is with factory farmed pigs, cows etc. And certainly in terms of sheer numbers, there are many more factory farmed pigs I would imagine.

I agree with you about puppy mills but most people are horrified on finding out about pet stores and puppy mills, but many people don't bat an eyelid over what happens to "food animals". We certainly don't view all animals the same way in our society.

Although you don't HAVE to become a vegetarian, you can at least support humane treatment for the critters we eat.

22. thank's for posting this
Anything even resembling good news from factory farming is few and far between. The 'farms' do everything they can to keep their practices out of the public eye, and the public is only too happy to oblige. Thinking about that stuff is a downer, let's instead think about Anna-Nicole.

It would seem so obvious that a civilized country would want to have a humane system of animal husbandry, from birth to slaughter, but apparently not.

If those interested in animal welfare have not heard of Temple Grandin, they should check her out. In brief, she is a high functioning autistic woman who helped to design a more humane system of slaughter. Before her ideas were implemented, people were saying the same things they say now-who cares as long as I get my meat, too expensive, why don't you care about people, etc. She is an advocate for autistic people and animals, and thank goodness for her.
