ACORN! Get Researching Who's Behind the Attacks!
We are under attack!

ACORN's respected work in registering voters in financially challenged areas has been set upon. Lou Dobbs railing against ACORN and has assembled a discussion panel on CNN tonight to make it a major strike. Urgent Media questions about ACORN's efforts are storming the public atmosphere ready to topple an Obama win. An ACORN scandal would also be a major distraction from war and economic woes we've faced as the campaigns ebb.

The first question is do ACORN workers get paid for each voter registered? Of course NOT! So why would ACORN sloppily fake thousands registrations?

Secondly, if they were faking the registrations it would be futile UNLESS voters where sent to vote in the name of newly "faked " registrants. The voting would then constitute voter fraud spring boarding off the fake registration. Is there an army of fraudulent voters out there with fake IDs ready to pull the lever for Obama? They would be easily detected if there would be. So what's the benefit for ACORN or Obama?

Thirdly, almost all the faked registrations are in a single person's handwriting according to what has been reported. If ACORN's long work in the area of registration were replied upon why would they use such a amateurish mode of fakery?

Fourthly, the utter widespread coordinated timing of the revelations of voter registration fakery, its thorough workup on Right wing sites and its spatial relationship to November 4th cause alarms to go off.

If there is one thing we've learned the Right will do whatever it takes to control the outcome of the 2008 Presidential Election. We can not put this past the Right's plan to discredit, cast doubt and outright steal this election.

Can we piece together a central clearing house on ACORN and do some of the leg work here DUers. I know I have a lot of questions and have just started looking.

The Truth About ACORN's Voter Registration Drive

Re: The Truth About ACORN's Voter Registration Drive

Election Day is less than a month away, and our efforts to make sure that low-income and minority voters have a voice and vote on November 4th are in full swing. Unfortunately, just as we've seen in previous election cycles, the more success we have in empowering these voters, the more attacks we have to fend off from partisan forces making unfounded accusations to disparage our work and help maintain the status quo of an unbalanced electorate. We want to take this opportunity to separate the facts of our successes from the falsehoods of our attackers.

On Monday, October 6, as voter registration deadlines passed in most states, ACORN completed the largest, most successful nonpartisan voter registration drive in history. In partnership with the nonpartisan organization Project Vote, we helped register over 1.3 million low-income, minority, and young voters in a total of 21 states. Highlights of this success include:

We collected over 151,000 registrations in Florida, 153,000 in Pennsylvania, 215,000 in Michigan, and nearly 250,000 in Ohio.

An estimated 60-70 percent of our applicants are people of color.

At least HALF of all are registrations are from young people between 18-29.

We are proud of this unprecedented success, and grateful to everyone who supported us in this massive effort, from our funders and partners to the literally thousands of hardworking individuals across the country who dedicated themselves to the cause and conducted the difficult work of registering 1.3 million Americans, one voter at a time.

And this work is far from over: now begins our effort mobilize these new voters around local and national issues, getting them to the polls and helping to channel their commitment and conviction into an ongoing movement for change in our communities.

As The Nation pointed out recently, ACORN's success in registering millions of low-income and minority voters has made it "something of a right-wing bogeyman." Though ACORN believes that the right to vote is not, and should never be, a partisan issue, attacks from groups threatened by our historic success continue to come, motivated by partisan politics and often perpetuated by the media without full investigation of the facts. As a result, there have been a few recent stories about investigations of former ACORN workers for turning in incomplete, erroneous, or fraudulent voter registration applications. Predictably, partisan forces have tried to use these isolated incidents to incite fear of the "bogeyman" of "widespread voter fraud." But we want to take this opportunity to set the record straight and tell you a few facts to show how these incidents really exemplify everything that ACORN is doing right:

Fact: ACORN has implemented the most sophisticated quality-control system in the voter engagement field, but in almost every state we are required to turn in ALL completed applications, even the ones we know to be problematic.

Fact: ACORN flags incomplete, problem, or suspicious cards when we turn them in, but these warnings are often ignored by election officials. Often these same officials then come back weeks or months later and accuse us of deliberately turning in phony cards.

Fact: Our canvassers are paid by the hour, not by the card, so there is NO incentive for them to falsify cards. ACORN has a zero-tolerance policy for deliberately falsifying registrations, and in the relatively rare cases where our internal quality controls have identified this happening we have fired the workers involved and turned them in to election officials and law-enforcement.

Fact: No charges have ever been brought against ACORN itself. Convictions against individual former ACORN workers have been accomplished with our full cooperation, using the evidence obtained through our quality control and verification processes.

Fact: Voter fraud by individuals is extremely rare, and incredibly difficult. There has never been a single proven case of anyone, anywhere, casting an illegal vote as a result of a phony voter registration. Even if someone wanted to influence the election this way, it would not work.

Fact: Most election officials have recognized ACORN's good work and praised our quality control systems. Even in the cities where election officials have complained about ACORN, the applications in question represent less than 1% of the thousands and thousands of registrations ACORN has collected.

Fact: Our accusers not only fail to provide any evidence, they fail to suggest a motive: there is virtually no chance anyone would be able to vote fraudulently, so there is no reason to deliberately submit phony registrations. ACORN is committed to ensuring that the greatest possible numbers of people are registered and allowed to vote, so there is also NO incentive to "disrupt the system" with phony cards.

Fact: Similar accusations were made, and attacks launched, against ACORN and other voter registration organizations in 2004 and 2006. These attacks were not only groundless, they have since been exposed as part of the U.S. Attorney-gate scandal and revealed to be part of a systematic partisan agenda of voter suppression.

These are the facts, and the truth is that a relatively small group of political operatives are trying to orchestrate hysteria about "voter fraud" and manufacture public outrage that they can use to further suppress the votes of millions of low-income and minority Americans.

These tactics are nothing new, and history has shown that they will come to nothing. We'll continue to weather the storm, as we've done for years, and we'll continue to share the truth about our work and express pride about our accomplishments.
Most importantly, we want to assure you that this good work continues, unabated and undeterred. ACORN will not be intimidated, we will not be provoked, and in this important moment in history we will not allow anyone to distract us from these vital efforts to empower our constituencies and our communities to speak for themselves. If the partisan political machines are afraid of low-income and minority voters, they're going to have to do a lot better than coming after ACORN.

After all, there are now at least 1.3 million more of them, and they will not be silenced. They're taking an interest, and taking a stand, and they'll be taking their concerns to the voting booth in November.

And ACORN will be here, to make sure that the voices of these Americans are heard, on Election Day and for every day to come.

3. I don't have inside baseball info, but here's what Randi Rhodes said, FWIW:
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 07:40 PM by BerryBush
She said ACORN pays registrants by the completed form, and that a lot of the workers who sign up to register voters are homeless people and other indigent individuals who badly need money. As a result, the temptation to fill out and return fake registration forms is very strong. Thing is, ACORN sorts through all the forms and dumps the fraudulent ones before anyone ever gets a chance to vote using those registrations. So there is no voter fraud--registration fraud yes (but only temporarily until they ferret it out), voter fraud no.

To edit: her information sounds like it's off, because she said the workers get paid by the completed form, and that's why faked forms get turned in.

5. That corrects what I know
I need to look into this further. I was informed that the workers were not paid a quota. And much of the financing for ACORN came from private sources with some 40% Government funding. ACORN has no control over whom the registrants vote for and so it is basically a nonpartisan effort.

8. They don't get paid by the form
See my above post with the facts.

Also, I'm working on a county clerk race and my candidate used to be political director of ACORN here in Michigan. According to her, they were not paid by the registration, but hourly.

11. Here's Randi's Friday show, second hour.
It was really good. The third and fourth clips deal specifically with ACORN and tie in what happened with the attorney firings at the Bush Justice Department. Interesting stuff. The first and second clips deal primarily with voter purging going on in battleground states and the NYT article that came out on Thursday that said it's happening again.

16. ACORN pays their employees....
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:54 PM by stillcool47
to register voters. They get paid an hourly wage. Every registration form by law, must be turned in.

I. Hiring Voter Registration Canvassers

1. Voter Registration Workers (Canvassers) are generally hired from the community where ACORN is conducting the drive.

2. Canvassers are hired to work set hour shifts and are paid based on the number of shifts they work, not on the number of applications they collect.

7. This whole thing is nuts - yes, pun intended
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 07:48 PM by DemoRabbit
My husband and I were just discussing this in the car on our way home from dinner. The first question I want answered is who were these workers who filled out the bogus forms. I also want to know what percentage they represent across the board... if ACORN registered 1.3 million new voters this year, how many of them were bogus?

From what I understand, by LAW, ACORN is REQUIRED to submit the bogus ones too. They are supposed to flag them as being potentially problematic, but they still must be submitted. Makes sense to me... if you have a pile that some ACORN worker deems "fishy" and doesn't submit them, someone other the other side would call it election fraud because the registrations WEREN'T handed in. No win situation apparently.

Last, but not least, fake registrations don't translate into fake votes. There's no real MOTIVE to submit phony registrations if your goal is to get people to the polls. Fake registrations don't translate into fake voters... voter fraud is pretty darn rare since the voter needs to know what polling place to go to and would have to have a fairly convincing fake photo ID to get into a booth, and certainly couldn't keep going back to the same polling place and risk being recognized if attempting to vote multiple times with different names. To me, there's a lot more motive for the registrants to lie (just to get rid of the ACORN worker) or the ACORN worker to lie to ACORN and pretend to be on the up-and-up, but really, their goal is to get ACORN in trouble.

They aren't paid per registration from what I know, so again, there's no motive to lie and inflate your registration numbers.

If I'm completely fair, the ONLY motive ACORN would have for intentionally committing registration fraud (NOT "voter fraud" since no one has voted yet) would be if someone paid them to help register voters... in other words, if Obama's campaign hired them to help register people (which they did during the primaries, but not during the general election) then Obama's camp should be pretty pissed off if ACORN didn't do a good job. Bad registration info means less REAL people registering to vote!

12. Nuts --> Lou Dobbs for making a big deal of it
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:09 PM by StClone
When accurate information would blunt the misguided assumptions that all wayward registrations somehow translate in to millions of fraudulent votes if any. Lou is propagating the confusion if you ask me. Fraudulent voting is nonexistent. That is pretty much the story as to why all the Federal Attorneys were fired by Rove when they failed to prosecute on grounds there was nothing to the charges.

17. good question - Why don't we have a name?
They received thousands of applications in one person's handwriting. Was it an employee or someone else? Don't they have a description or are able to fingerprint the registrations?

15. Lou Dobbs
I have been watching lou Dobbs for a while,he is nothing but A racist to the core, and he hates Obama like poison.
An Independent he is not.
Nothing Obama has done so far has he been satisfied with.
So far he has had no discussion of any of angry, racist Mob type actions, at some of the McCain/Palin Campaign.
Only thing he is interested in, is highlighting any alleged problems relating to Obama or the Democrats and Never one Discussion of Bush,Cheney and the Cabal of Lying War Criminals, including their abettor,John McCain.

America should be ashamed and outraged of the macain/palin campaign of race baiting,it is disgusting,I have lost all respect for John McCain,he has lost all shred of integrity.
And as a disabled Viet Nam vet myself,he is no hero to me.
Lou Dobbs is a Jerk
