McCain vows to 'whip' Obama
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 06:52 PM by bigtree
Sunday October 12, 2008 7:46 pm

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- Republican John McCain vowed Sunday to "whip'' Democratic rival Barack Obama's "you-know-what'' when the two presidential candidates meet Wednesday in their final televised debate.

McCain made that pledge as top advisers said he is weighing new economic proposals to help the nation weather the financial crisis. The Arizona senator refused to answer a reporter's question Sunday about what plans he might be considering.

"We're a couple points down, OK, nationally, but we're right in this game,'' McCain said to cheers. "The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two, but in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, they want knowledge and they want vision. We'll give that to America.''

"We're going to spend a lot of time and after I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7,'' McCain said.

40. It's Not A Racist One, That's For Sure.
Some of you want to convince yourselves that it is. You want to twist it into having racial intent. But that's just flat out wrong. If you choose to stay convinced of such a flawed interpretation, then you are being willfully ignorant.

The phrase "whip his ass" has no origins that relate to racism whatsoever. Ass is a donkey. It's about having control by whipping someone elses donkey etc.

McCain said it, he knew what he said, and it has the meaning any rationally thinking individual readily knows it to mean; which is to simply win handily.

But it ain't racist. That's a fact. The phrase has no roots to racism past or present whatsoever. You're seeing what you want to see, not what's actually there.

64. It was the beginning of the end for Carter v. Kennedy

"If Kennedy runs, I'll whip his ass."

The statement was so uncharacteristic of Carter and contributed to the rancor of that race which gave us Reagan.

Granted, it was a private remark and Ted Kennedy should have been a bigger man at the convention, but it's all water under the bridge now.

89. Is there any kind of metaphor for defeating a black man that CAN'T be interpreted as racist?
Beat, whip, trounce, trample, stomp, clobber, hammer, hang out to dry...

How long will it be, how many generations have to pass, until the hypersensitivity (being pointed out to us by someone of unidentified race but who certainly is NOT Barack Obama) fades away?

Oh, am I allowed to say "fade away"? I don't mean to say that black people should start looking like white people...

74. Look, he may or may not have meant it in racist context
and people are familiar with the term as an alternative to "kicking one's ass" and so forth, however given the week's racially charged circumstances and events (by the McCain camp's own doing), he should have the fucking sense to use terms that are in no way to be construed in a racial sense.

In other words, he's fucking clueless, senile, and hasn't a clue what he's up against. So far, him and his Moose killer of a VP have failed all three rounds in convincing the American people that they can get the country out of the mess we are in. I don't expect anything to change Tuesday.

88. Your Laughter Makes You Look Silly And Shows Your Ignorance On The Subject.
The origin of the phrase goes back to an ass being a donkey, not a person's ass. You might want to educate yourself let you continue to look like a fool.

Slaves weren't whipped in their asses. They were whipped on their backs.

95. Wow, Are You Embarrassing Yourself.
Are you so closed minded as to not be able to grasp the simple concept that when I state that I'm referring to the ORIGINS of the phrase? Are you so foolish as to imply that I'm inferring that's the context in which McCain said it? My god, how silly.

The point is that it has no roots to racism. As it's developed over the years, it now means to beat one's opponent handily and is not racial in context whatsoever. McCain spoke it in the same manner as anyone else would speak it, as trash talk and overconfidence stating that he's going to win the debate. Nothing more, nothing less. Calling it racist is silly.

The second debate was a Town Hall, which is supposed to be McCain's preferred format, and he lost.

So far, he's had his best topic, and best format, and he's still working on an 0-fer.

I don't like McCain's chances in the third debate.

Who's reality are you defending? The McCain campaign has absolutely NO credibility and doesn't deserve a lick of the benefit of the doubt when it comes to their intentions. They are engaged in a effort to stir up the racists and bigots who make up their base. Their entire campaign has not only been (deliberately) tone-deaf, but they've been deliberately hatemongering for support. They've denied every charge. I don't happen to believe them. They've lied about it and don't deserve ANY benefit of ANY of our defenses.

Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 10:25 PM by Generic Other
The repubs have been blowing this dog whistle every chance they get. And now they have dog shit on their shoes.

OMC is spending way too much time in this thread defending a white man's right to be a racist if you ask me.

I suppose he thinks Bush when he was given a portrait of MLKing wasn't snickering for a reason when he said how he looked forward to "hanging" King in the White House. Sure sure...we're all just being too sensitive, aren't we?

60. I'm Being A Voice Of Reason.
Saying I'm defending a white man's right to be racist is downright asinine.

Fact is, the phrase 'whip his ass' isn't racial in context whatsoever. It never has been.

I defend because I have integrity. I defend because I can't stand when ignorant freepers distort OUR phrases and make something out of nothing. I defend because claiming it to be racism makes us look dumb and I don't like that. So I'm simply being the voice of reason.

Gripe all you want. Convince yourself otherwise all you want. The phrase isn't racial in context at all.

105. Neither is "black hole" racist but some people on this board got bent out of shape
when some politician referred to a committee as a "black hole". If memory serves, the committee had some African-Americans on it and the committee members and "some" posters on DU decided to let all logic escape through their head and started screaming "racism".

Never mind that anyone with a junior high/middle school education should be familiar with a black hole and how it applied to the politician's statement.

So, while I admire your efforts, you're pretty much doomed to fail in this case.

That said, I'd think "kick his 'you know what'" would have been a far more prudent expression.

61. Progressives, Liberals And Democrats Should ALL Care About Accuracy And Integrity.
That's all I'm doing. Some are knee jerking to the concept of racism where one doesn't exist. That phrase never has been racial in context or used in racial ways. That's a fact. Declaring it to be racist now is just dumb. You don't want to see that fine. But don't you dare put me down for simply being objective and intelligent enough to see it as the benign phrase it was.

I'm not one ramp up the race issue. But to say that this phrase has no racial origins is simply not true.

It was, however, a very dumb, stupid, non-presidential thing to say in advance of the debate. But then again, that pretty much sums up McSame's past month!

And the phrase has absolutely no origins that relate back to racism whatsoever. Within the origin of the phrase itself, 'ass' means donkey, not the ass of a black person. Get a grip.

Have you been to India? Have you seen the homeless in the large cities and in the medium and small cities also? Have you been to Tibet? Do you give to charity? Just curious about where you stand. And, yes, it was racist. Look up "theory of mind" and you may understand where people are coming from who disagree with you. If that doesn't work, try "cognitive dissonance". "To whip someone's ass" is an expression not a fact. It only becomes a fact if it is accomplished and I don't mean with a donkey.

43. unfortunately, it probably was meant to be racist
It's no mistake when they say Barack "HUSSEIN!!1!!" Obama, or call him Barack "Osama" then immediately correct themselves. Those are 100% intentional word choices designed to elicit fear in the audience. It's clear that the Republican tactic is fear mongering, equating terrorism with Islam, implying Obama is a muslim, and concluding that Barack Obama is a terrorist. It's racism pure and simple, but just beneath the surface with just enough deniability to avoid out and out calling him a terrorist.

And now "whip his ass"? Sure, that's a common phrase and most of the ways it's used aren't racist. But given their other word choices, yeah, have no doubt that they mean it to conjure up exactly the image of lashing with a whip, and the time period and environment that implies...pre Civil War Southern slave punishment.

Do not underestimate the depths to which Rovian attack techniques will sink. We all like to think that most people are good, honest and civilized and fortunately most of humanity is. But not all, there are immoral people who will say and do anything for power. Closing your eyes to them doesn't make them go away.

47. I Highly Doubt It.
You say most of the ways it's used aren't racist. Can you point to a time where it ever has been used as a racist phrase? There are NO roots in that phrase that are linked to racism. It's a perfectly benign phrase. This is making something of nothing and I fear many (outside of here especially) would believe us to be fools for thinking so.

62. McCain has truly lost his mind. Remember when we found out Reagan had lost it & the coverd for him?
This is what is hapening right now. I think McCain has periods of lucidity, followed by periods of complete nonsensical bullshit. Does he seem to have gone downhill very very fast in his health and mental state? I think many people felt they could support him because they had images of the former McCain in their mind, I imagine they are quite shocked to see that he's aged like 20 years in the past 5.

I feel like they're doing a Reagan on us.. trying to hide the fact that McCain has lost it. Who in their fucking right mind would actually say "I"m going to whip his you-know-what" in the debate. ?????

I don't know why some folks here feel these low-life maggots need some clarification or defense of what they've said from our side. They forfeited any right to that expectation when they began to lie and demagogue. The defenses here are a gift to a man who has absolutely no respect for ANYONE here and intends to hijack America and keep us bound to the republican's fascist autocracy. Lives are in the balance. Leave the republicans to explain their own words. They don't deserve the benefit of any defense here.
