US prepared to accept reconciliation with Taliban: US Defence secretary Gates

The United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Bush administration would be prepared to reconcile with the Taliban if the Afghan government pursued talks to end the war.

However, he says there's no chance of any negotiations with Osama Bin Laden's al Qaeda organisation.

Mr Gates says reconciliation could be the political end to the conflict in Afghanistan, but it must happen on the Afghan government's terms and the Taliban must subject itself to the sovereignty of the government.

3. They need to get back to the oil bidness and be buddies again.
The BushCo mob and the terraists are too much alike to keep fighting. Maybe Gates and Bush can send them another 43 million dollars like they did right before 9/11...

4. He's behind the curve
The Taliban had a sit-down with the Saudis and declared they'd split with al Qaeda. So, negotiations with al Qaeda won't be a requisite for talks.

5. The oil barons want us to stay on top of the Iraqi OIL FIELDS.
The corrupt Bush oil cabal will sign peace treaties with our enemies to keep us in Iraq forever.

Traitors.

7. Actually, it is a significant move
The Afghan war has been indefensible for some time, and now it is also unaffordable. So it is significant that Gates would actually start to publicly outline the framework for a ceasefire and withdrawal.

This is something Obama has to get his head around. Dems have wanted to believe that Afghanistan is a "good war" compared to Iraq which is a "bad war". The sooner Obama backs away from this position, the better. Gates' statement will make it easier for Obama to shift his position, which is a good thing.

8. Well, at least there's one war where the
Republicans can stand up like adults and admit defeat. Why is it so hard to do in Iraq? It seems really odd that the Imperial government would care so little about the Afghani War. Of course when Obama is at the Empire's helm, he says he will ramp up the conflict... Sort of an odd juxtaposition thing there, eh?
