I'm not planning to retire.
I expect to be working into my 80s, should I live that long. Which means I'll be competing with my students or their children.

2. Pretty sure you are not alone. My husband says he will be working with one foot in the grave and
another on a banana peel. My Dad is 80, he retired when he was 58. He worked for Pfizer for 28 yrs. Just got notification that his retirement benefits might be reduced. And he has lost quite a bit in the stock market of late. He is worried. But at least he did get to retire, and he had a pension plan. There is that. My brother has been working at the same plant my Dad worked at, for 35 yrs. It was sold out 10 yrs ago and now this company, foreign owned, is not backing the pension plans that they promised to honor. He thinks he won't have any retirement, after 35 yrs.

4. I feel for my brother. He doesn't deserve this. Really, who does?

5. Ulysses, I am a teacher also
and have taught 35 years already. I was joking with some equally seasoned teachers that we should put orders in for our hover-rounds now so that when we are still teaching at 75 we can get around. The only good news is that I still love the job, so things could be worse!

6. That's a bummer. I retired two years ago at age 44.
Like many retired people, I am still working part time. It probably helps to be childless. I still find the part time work to be aggravating, and money is kinda tight.

Sorta funny, because one of my motivations for going from full time to part time was fear that Bush mismanagement of the economy could wipe out any savings I might accumulate. I may not be able to retire fully at age 55, like I sorta hoped, but then again I am enjoying half-time work while I am still sorta young. Plus during 2006 I had a whole two days of vacation. One in January and the other one in November, which I worked all day at the polls. As a part-timer, I have had several weeks off. Including tonight, sort of.

7. "Mountains O'Things". . .
Guess Tracy Chapman had it nailed, some twenty years ago. I suspected then her words may prove prophetic for my situation. . .

The life I've always wanted
I guess I'll never have
I'll be working for somebody else
Until I'm in my grave
I'll be dreaming of a live of ease
And mountains
Oh mountains o' things

Never wanted the mountains of things. Just a quiet life, security for my wife, and a day or two with little worry. Maybe it may still come to pass. . .
