Obama Campaign Solicitations Over the Phone?
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 06:52 PM by liberalmuse
I just got off the phone with someone who said they were from the Obama campaign. They actually used my former address, but I've donated many times and the Obama campaign has my new address. Is this a scam? I refused to give my credit card number over the phone, but the guy wouldn't let up. After telling him 4 or 5 times that I would donate from an online website, he asked if I wanted to talk to his supervisor. ???? I told him I'm sticking by my rule not to give my info over the phone. Has anyone ran into this before? Is this legit? I somehow doubt it.

2. I have volunteered...
with Obama's campaign making calls and we have never asked for money over the phone. I wouldn't trust it. Sounds like a scam.

Donating online is the best way.

5. Thanks for confirming.
The guy got frantic when I wouldn't give him my credit card number. Also, he had an old address and my cell phone#. When I have donated the past several times, I use my new address and lan line#. I hope no one falls for this, especially Obama's older supporters.

4. They do solicit over the phone
I have had one call that was quite agressive and told the guy he was not helping win voters. Next time I think I will ask to speak to the supervisor. These doesn't help at all.

9. It isn't a good idea.
I mean, I told the guy I'd go right online and donate, but that wasn't good enough. Weird!

15. He doesn't get the credit
It sounds to me like they've hired telemarketers. I think they're supposed to be more professional that way. But people like this caller probably get frustrated because if they don't sell, they don't earn. It's probably especially frustrating to hear that someone is going to go online when it means their call may have generated a donation, but they aren't getting credit for it.

8. Total scam... Team Obama do NOT solicit donations by phone, so far as I know.
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 06:57 PM by ClarkUSA
Same thing happened to me and the guy had no clue as to what was happening in the campaign on the ground; I quizzed him
as a test and he flunked. Also, I asked him about some people at HQ that I know in the Finance Department and he had no clue
about them, either.

11. I had the same thing happen to me, so I said I would donate if they mailed me stuff
When it arrived, there was no website on the letter and "pledge" sheet, no phone number and only a PO Box # to send it to the "campaign" in Massachusettes! When I checked Obama's website, the only address to mail donations to was in Chicago, so I donated over his website instead mailing it in.

I think there are some scams going on out there.

12. Sounds like a good move
I wouldn't give my credit card out over the phone unless I was 100% sure who I was talking to (in other words, if I initiated the call.

13. Ok, here's the deal: There are a number of likely-scams calling people....
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 07:04 PM by Poll_Blind
...using CID (Caller ID) generation machines to appear to be from your state or even city. For instance, there was a phone call from Portland (I live in Eugene) recently which most definitely had faked CID and which (from other reports on http://whocalled.us) rang on your pickup to an person in a phone bank trying to solicit money. When you try to call the number back, it comes up disconnected. You can claim anything you want and a CID generator is only a couple of hundred bucks so scam artists are having a field day.

Believe it or not, but it actually gets weirder. Many people in Oregon, like myself, were reporting the number on WhoCalled.US and several posters came in to point out that the number was supposedly linked to a Democratic organization (I forget, it was a few weeks ago). People started believing the posters until the head of the organization came into the thread and said it was entirely bullshit, they only do e-mail they've never done calls. People who had been receiving the calls had assumed the posters were right and called the Democratic organization up to complain!

So, at least in one instance: Scam artists/Repuke ops are contacting people after generating FAKE Caller ID to make the caller believe that the call is coming from a legit organization, soliciting funds or whatever, and then when there is an outcry on a well-known place like WhoCalled.US, they pop in and attempt to reiterate those claims.

Nasty, nasty shit. I got another call today, same deal. Just hang up. Don't tell them jack shit.
