My S. Baptist coworker just found out today that her husband
has to take, at least at this point, one UNPAID day off now every three weeks because the state is in deep doo doo financially. He is a state worker in a very, very red state. They are value voters.

Oh, well. She is shocked. God help her, she thinks Bush was a "good Christian".

Well, what can one say? :eyes:

2. If I were very evil, and I am, I might be tempted to remind her
that repubs are in favor of smaller gov't and now it's her husband's turn to make that come true.

You, however, may be a nice person and wouldn't dream of saying something so snarky.

:hi:

54. It doesn't matter how nice she is -- she (and *WE*) got what she voted for.
And if she didn't understand the entire Republican
platform when she voted her "God, guns, and gays"
agenda, well stupidity is no excuse.

12. I said something very close to that to a co-worker some years
back. We were both state gov't employees and her husband was working in the campaign for the repub candidate for governor. Within days of the repub's win, you guessed it; first there was a hiring freeze on state agencies and then the cut-backs began. Her husband was about to become one of the cut-backs.

When she started to complain, I reminded her that that's what she'd voted for and what her husband had worked and voted for. Her response? "Gee, I never thought of that."

*sigh*

The gov't is bigger and more involved, both operationally and financially, than they ever were.

His pals stuck a pitchfork in his back. They gave him the exact opposite of what he thought he was for.

We had a similar situation a few years back in our state. I believe they were able to bank that time, but I'm not sure. That was before I worked for the State.

It's also frightening to see how many states' unemployment funds are in danger of complete depletion. A situation like that could have consequences I don't even want to think about.

I'm burning through vacation/personal days just to meet the minimum requirements to keep my benefits, and I'm almost all out. My hours at work have basically been cut in half, every week, and there's no sign that our hours will increase anytime soon. One unpaid day off every month or so would be a godsend compared to with what I'm having to deal with now, which is the prospect of two unpaid days off PER WEEK.

32. I hate it when this kind of shit happens to anyone, even a hardcore Republican. But I think you
can use this as an educational moment.

Maybe you can gently remind her that those benefits that her husband has (had), and his 40-hour work week, and his safe working conditions were all products of Democratic policies that were implemented over the long, hard objections and resistance of Republican elected officials and businessmen.

Maybe you can help her to see that people who are in need of financial assistance are not always lazy, shiftless Democrat-types.

Maybe you can offer her a chance to REALLY THINK about what is different about Democrats and Republicans. It's all in how WE view the role of Government as HELPING Americans have better lives through good government. It's not just about good jobs with good benefits. It's about food that is inspected by qualified inspectors so we are protected from disease. It's about funding science and health research so we can all benefit from vaccines and learn more about the world that God (I'm using her point of reference here, not mine) has created for us humans.

I suspect that with a little gentle, non-accusatory "witnessing" you might be able to help this poor, be-nighted creature see the light.

I read something yesterday where one of our Democratic leaders (I can't remember who) said to a gathering of Obama supporters that if all of us Democrats just persuaded ONE McCain supporter to vote for Obama, we would win this election by the biggest landslide in history.

These people are all for smaller government, but when you look at it, the government is a huge (often the largest) employer of people in a state.

They can't put together that smaller government means fewer gov't jobs? Meaning they might lose theirs?

58. What state are you in, if you don't mind?

In SC state agencies have recently been told they'll have to cut 3%. This is after one cut already, don't know how much that one was.

SC revenues haven't been as much as anticipated. Imagine that.

61. Tell her to send him down to Houston on his day off
To clean up after the hurricane. Churches are sending squads down there to clean up for those who can't afford it, and it would put his spare time to good use.

1) This is God's will.

2) He will provide.

73. I would politely remind her that elections have
consequences and she's now experiencing them. I also might be tempted to ask her where she got the info that Bush was a "good Christian" since he rarely sets foot in a church.

76. When I heard that Bush mocked Karla Faye Tucker begging for her life,
I knew that his religiousity was totally fake. That was before he was running for president. If I knew it, why didn't everyone else?
