Were we really *almost* there?
We were on the very verge of universal single payer health care.

We were on the verge of the 'we' ethic in society replacing the 'me' ethic.

We were on the verge of a Renaissance in energy advancement.

We were on the verge of a completely new transportation model.

We were almost there.

But now there's nothing left.

It is all disappearing.

1. yes, and it was the Age of Information, which quickly gave way
to neo-barbarianism...now we're something like a decrepit feudal oligarchy.

13. It seems the AOI was a double edged sword
Because it allowed bullshit to move at the same speed as the truth, and bullshit pays better.

2. Most of the great social progress...
of the kinds you are listing, grew out of the ashes of the great depression.

So, the near future may actually be the best time for those things to happen. What we need to do is make sure we choose ourselves another FDR, instead of another Hitler. Those are the two paths that got tried after the last depression.

5. We have nothing left for the next generation
Except bad examples and massive debt.
We can hope they will be the ones to bring those things to THEIR children.
We failed them miserably.

8. Some form of universal health care was proposed under FDR 60 years ago.
Truman kicked around the idea, but he lost control of Congress to the Republicans, and they passed the anti-labor Taft-Hartley Act.

9. We have an enoumous opportunity to fix things
But if the last few years are any gauge, we'll drop the ball and let someone like Bush take us deeper into hell.

10. It's not disappearing ... all the information is still there ... we're still here.
Information is more important than capital. We will all get there -- and it'll be an even better place for where we've all been together.

12. We were on the way to being on the way
Obama still had a giant mess to clean up before this but in true republican style they've given up the race and resorted to true scorched earth policy. In 2012 Dems will be "blamed" for not being able to dig us out of their shit avalance in four years.

14. Look at what's really disappearing:
"Tithe and it will come back to you tenfold as Jesus rewards those who are saved."

"The ownership society is a sure thing"

"Lower taxes mean higher revenues"

"A rising tide lifts all boats"

"Competition is good for health care"

"Private charity will compensate for welfare"

"There are plenty of jobs to go around"

"Offshoring is good for us"

"A free market will always regulate itself"

Feel free to add your own.

16. Capitalism Died. This is not a bad thing.
It is a good thing.

And the funny thing is we are going to see the worst first, that's how it works in Capitalism

Hopefully, we will reassess our economic priorities, or we will be back here again in 50, 75 maybe even 4 years...

15. What makes you think its dissapearing?
Sure we are crashing financially...

That's bound to happen

Every hour, every day, I am more convinced this is the second shoe dropping.

USSR fell in 91, USA falls in 2009.

But the apparatuses will still be there.

Things will be OK. Just not OK in the way they want it, OK in the way WE want it because they won't be in charge anymore.

18. Almost doesn't count.
We were NEVER there.

We are farther away from being there.

We may or may not ever get there.

I never believed in almost, in the context of being "so close, damn it!"...

I wholeheartedly believe in almost, in the context of being "a lesson". Learn equally from both the successes and failures, then try it again.

Almost, in the past and present, serves purpose only for the future.
