The ultimate irony of the conservative dream.
Ever since Ronald Reagan, perhaps before, the conservatives have said that government is the problem, not the solution. Taxcuts were the antidote for every problem that might affect us. The free market was God. Government needed to get out of the way, deregulate, and let the market work.

By the time that George W Bush took the office, they had become comfortably ensconsed in every part of the conservative myths. For the first time in our history, GWB cut taxes to the bone, even while carrying on two different wars. The national debt more than doubled in his two terms. All the while, even today, some still hold true to their faith that all we need is more taxcuts and let the big business trickle down the rewards upon the masses.

But many are seeing government as the only solution to many of these Republican-created problems. In effect, they have become socialists. They are even talking of nationalizing the banks. They have already given over a trillion dollars to the failures of this grand experiment called "supply-side".

Now the Big Bankers and the investment classes stand speechless, with their mouths agape and their eyes like a deer in the headlights. The reality can no longer be denied. Their philosophy and ideology has failed completely. There is nothing left but the ashes of a crash.

Perhaps it is more tragedy than irony? Because of their actions and their philosophy, they have created an economic disaster. No amount of taxcuts or deregulation will get us out of this mess and they know it. Once the conservatives were given the power to do as they may, they ended up driving us closer and closer to socialism, not the dream of Ronald Reagan and his followers.
