Dow, S&P break records
Blue-chip averages hit intraday and closing highs after minutes from last central bank meeting add to bets that the Fed can lower rates again this year.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks rallied Tuesday, with the Dow and S&P 500 ending at new records after the minutes from the last Fed meeting showed the bankers were unanimous in their decision to cut interest rates - and that they would be willing to cut rates further, if needed.

The Dow Jones industrial average (Charts) jumped more than 120 points, ending at an all-time high of 14,164.53, according to initial tallies. The blue-chip barometer had hit an intraday high of 14,166.40 shortly before the close.

5. Any idea what the high was in 1928?
Same thing - massive speculation, betting on borrowed paper pumped up the market to dizzying heights, then the house of cards came tumbling down.

13. I hope all the eager beavers who jumped on "bargains" at 10,200 are paying attention.
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 03:00 PM by TexasObserver
Over the past two to three weeks, I have practically begged people here to GET OUT of the DOW et al. because we were headed to 9000 or below. I was met with pseudo experts who claimed quite loudly that 10.2K was a bargain, and that they were bargain shopping.

This market may not make it back to 14,000 for 3 years.

15. Yep I had a friend call earlier this week .......
with the same concerns, I hate giving financial advice ever .... but I did and she listened and am sure she is a bit relieved right about now. Anyway hope this thing turns or at least stabilizes soon. 7700 is my bottom at the moment. But that like everything else is just speculation. Peace.

16. "Can you afford to lose half your port folio value?" is the question to ask them.
Or, it was a few months ago. Now, we're probably within 1000 points of the bottom, for the DOW.
