are in the stock market.

A major recession means major job losses. Every working family should be worried.

Nikkei average fell 9.5% in Japan and Toyota is now officially on the skids.

Didn't notice your earlier topic, but thanks for alerting us on it, anyway.

While American politicians shoot the shit with one another, Asia falls.

Toyota, specifically, is on the skids? Why are they being hurt more than others? (Because they're the biggest automaker, or some other aspect?)

71. Their stock was being dumped, massively, according to CNN...
Edited on Wed Oct-08-08 03:45 AM by countryjake
I can't find anything yet on what they were reporting cause it was only an hour ago that I heard it and now CNN is covering the debate again. But they said something about Toyota having slumping sales in foreign markets (meaning here, probably) and an expected drop of about 40% in Toyota's yearly profits. Bad prices at Nippon Steel was also mentioned, in relation to auto manufacturing. Actually, they made it sound like that was why the Nikkei was falling so sharply.

(edited to add)

Here's a CNN video that speaks briefly about Toyota:
http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2008/10/08/lok.lah.nikkei.markets.cnn

And here's a piece from CNBC on it:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/27075096/site/14081545

Japan led the dive, with the Nikkei 225 plunging 9.4 percent to its biggest one-day drop since the 1987 stock market crash. Several factors fuelled the selloff -- mounting fears of a global recession, expectations of a slide in profits at Toyota Motor and a firmer yen. Japanese steelmakers such as Nippon Steel slumped 11 percent amid concerns a global downturn will stifle steel demand. Exporters were dealt a further blow by a firmer yen, with Elpida Memory sinking 12 percent.

That pessimism was reflected in the way investors dumped shares of Toyota Motor. The world's biggest automaker plunged 11 percent, after the Nikkei business daily reported that the automaker was likely to post a 40 percent slide in annual profit, missing its profit estimates on weak sales in the U.S. and slower growth in China.

CNN's Quest (Allegedly) Gets the Meth Out
http://www.tmz.com/2008/04/18/cnns-quest-allegedly-gets-the-meth-out/5
Posted Apr 18th 2008 5:53PM by TMZ Staff

CNN's Richard Quest arrested todayCNN International's business travel specialist, Richard Quest, was arrested early this morning and booked on a misdemeanor charge of drug possession after police found him wandering around Central Park at the Kevin Spacey ungodly hour of 3:40am - way past the park's curfew.

UPDATE: According to some kinky reports, Quest also had a rope around his neck that was tied to his genitals -- and a sex toy in his shoe. How Dita Von Teese of him!

Police were escorting Quest out of the park when he voluntarily told them, "I have meth in my pocket." He was then searched and indeed, was holding a small amount of methamphetamine in a Ziploc bag.

CNN had no immediate comment.

UPDATE: Quest was arraigned this afternoon in Manhattan's Criminal Court. Judge Anthony Ferrara told the reporter that if he attends counseling and therapy for the next six months that his case will be dismissed, but warned that if he failed to do so, he would be back in court and on his way to jail.

"The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.

Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.

78. You know BB
I have been scarce around here lately. I was let known in no uncertain terms that many here didn't want "my kind".
However, I dived in a couple of threads and apparently they were flooded by the armchair analysts who supported this "bailout"...and even saw someone called a "republican" because they opposed the "bailout".
It was actually refreshing to dip into the "TGIP" by "OMC" to see that I wasn't alone in thinking that piece of shit they passed was not beneficial to "we the people".
 for the reference.

80. Even worse...
wait til you're hit with "utopian religion of the loony left". The condescension and accusations have me re-thinking lots of sympathetic stumping I'd been doing for what seems like months now..electoral politics shows its true colors when faced with major threats to the hand that feeds it. A lesson I learned long ago.

87. It Was A Necessary Move That Had To Be Done. Still Is.
Every time someone else points to immediate day's drops as evidence the bailout was unnecessary, it makes them look monumentally ignorant to those who know better.

And just remember that with each mockery you make, you are issuing the same mockery to Barbara Boxer, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Obama, Dodd, Biden and many other fine Democratic Senators who I can assure you breathed a sigh of relief of "Thank God it passed" afterwards.

77. Europe up to around 3-5% now, but still not looking good.
England also implementing 85b bank bailout I just heard on CNBC. We are trend-setters. Bailouts are the new black.
