How cool is this? Freedom stands tall

Atop the dome of the Capitol stands Freedom, a 19-1/2 foot bronze statue that has stood there since 1863.



The statue is probably little known because of it lofty perch. It is just 'up there'.

Predating the statue by just a bit is the plaster version, from which the bronze was made. The plaster statue is the same 19-1/2 foot high allegorical female form by Thomas Crawford. For years and decades she has stood in one of the tunnels that connects the various buildings in the Capitol complex, pretty much out of the way of ordinary citizens.

Last week she was moved to the Great Hall of the new Capitol visitor center. Slated to open soon, she will likely become more well known that her bronze twin, as she will be seen by scores of thousands and be right there - up close and personal.
