In honor of our furry friends...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EYocy_DN60

Thank you Sarah for this message, thank you Barack for committing to adopting an animal in need!

This is a shout-out for anyone who has rescued a pet... a friend.

Perhaps it is "us" that have been rescued.

1. My best kitty friends have all been rescues
We often joke that our cats think they own us. Rescued cats are different. They're grateful.

6. Yeah except when you rescue one that's pregnant and you wind up with four
the other three sure as hell aren't grateful. Lazy bums.

Actually they're good cats. We've had 'em for nine years now.

What a precious kitty!

Black cats have a hard time this time of year (Halloween season). I have heard horror stories. x(

I think I remember a pic post of yours showing your kitty waking up... so adorable! (I may be thinking of someone else, but I think it was you). That was one of my favorite kitty posts!

18. Yeah, I looked for a black cat specifically for that reason
I used to do pet rescue, and black dogs and cats get euthanized more than any others. Most rescues will not adopt out ANY black cats before or around Halloween because of all the sickos out there. I adopted Atticus Pye just a few weeks ago; he was already four or five months old and had spent at least two months at the shelter, so I figured it was now or never for the sweet little guy!

He's adapting very well, as you can see: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x8145777

49. I think that it's entirely superficial
there are more black dogs and cats than any other color to begin with; it's just the way genetics work. People look for a pet that's unique and has "personality"; the see different markings or colors as setting their pet apart and making them more unique. Plus, there are all those stupid superstitions that anything black must be associated with evil forces or some such nonsense. we really are a hopelessly shallow species.

7. A recent rescue story... 7 kittens lost their mother...
A guy my wife works with had a mother cat that recently had 7 kittens. They live in the country. A week ago, they lost the mom to a predator. The kittens were only 4 weeks old.

This family had no way to keep them alive, so we adopted them.

Here are the new additions to our family. They are doing great.

Enjoy.

56. So cute! I can't have cats as I'm allergic :( And we can't get another dog now
We're hoping to move overseas and getting our littly buddy through quarantine and through all the tests and whatnot will damn near break the bank. But I hope to be able to adopt a dog when we get settled. We got our dog supposedly not from a mill - from a breeder online who bred poodles but had a shih tzu "hop the fence" as it were. I'm not entirely sure now that I know more about it :( But we wanted a puppy for our first dog ever, and I can only have certain breeds because of allergies.

I hope to be able to rescue a hypoallergenic doggy when we get wherever we end up. He makes it so much better to come home, and hang out, and stay up late, and get up early, and eat dinner, and so on. Dogs are wonderful!

24. Yes, the Humane Society Leg. Fund has Never endorsed a Presidential Candidate in the past, but they
have now

Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Obama-Biden

One of the guiding principles of the Humane Society Legislative Fund is that we evaluate candidates based on a single criterion: where they stand on animal protection policies. We don’t make decisions based on party affiliation, or any other social issue, or even how many pets they have. We care about their views and actions on the major policy debates relating to animal welfare.

It stirs controversy to get involved in candidate elections. But we believe that candidates for office and current lawmakers must be held accountable, or they will see the animal protection movement as a largely irrelevant political constituency. In order to have good laws, we need good lawmakers, and involvement in elections is an essential strategy for any serious social movement, including our cause.

While we’ve endorsed hundreds of congressional candidates for election, both Democrats and Republicans, we’ve never before endorsed a presidential candidate. We have members on the left, in the center, and on the right, and we knew it could be controversial to choose either party’s candidate for the top office in the nation. But in an era of sweeping presidential power, we must weigh in on this most important political race in the country. Standing on the sidelines is no longer an option for us.

Obama I’m proud to announce today that the HSLF board of directors—which is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans—has voted unanimously to endorse Barack Obama for President. The Obama-Biden ticket is the better choice on animal protection, and we urge all voters who care about the humane treatment of animals, no matter what their party affiliation, to vote for them.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has been a solid supporter of animal protection at both the state and federal levels. As an Illinois state senator, he backed at least a dozen animal protection laws, including those to strengthen the penalties for animal cruelty, to help animal shelters, to promote spaying and neutering, and to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. In the U.S. Senate, he has consistently co-sponsored multiple bills to combat animal fighting and horse slaughter, and has supported efforts to increase funding for adequate enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, and federal laws to combat animal fighting and puppy mills.

In his response to the HSLF questionnaire, he pledged support for nearly every animal protection bill currently pending in Congress, and said he will work with executive agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior to make their policies more humane. He wrote of the important role animals play in our lives, as companions in our homes, as wildlife in their own environments, and as service animals working with law enforcement and assisting persons with disabilities. He also commented on the broader links between animal cruelty and violence in society.

Obama has even on occasion highlighted animal protection issues on the campaign trail, and has spoken publicly about his support for animal protection. In reaction to the investigation showing the abuse of sick and crippled cows which earlier this year led to the largest meat recall in U.S. history, he issued a statement saying “that the mistreatment of downed cows is unacceptable and poses a serious threat to public health.” He is featured in Jana Kohl’s book about puppy mills, A Rare Breed of Love, with a photo of Obama holding Baby (shown above), the three-legged poodle rescued from an abusive puppy mill operation, and his political mentor, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), is the author of the latest federal bill to crack down on puppy mills.

Obamabiden2 Importantly, Obama’s running mate, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) has been a stalwart friend of animal welfare advocates in the Senate, and has received high marks year after year on the Humane Scorecard. Biden has not only supported animal protection legislation during his career, but has also led the fight on important issues. He was the co-author with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) in the 108th Congress on legislation to ban the netting of dolphins by commercial tuna fishermen. He was the lead author of a bill in the 107th Congress to prohibit trophy hunting of captive exotic mammals in fenced enclosures, and he successfully passed the bill through the Senate Judiciary Committee.

On the Republican ticket, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has also supported some animal protection bills in Congress, but has been inattentive or opposed to others. He has voted for and co-sponsored legislation to stop horse slaughter, and voted to eliminate a $2 million subsidy for the luxury fur coat industry. But he has largely been absent on other issues, and has failed to co-sponsor a large number of priority bills or sign onto animal protection letters that have had broad support in the Senate.

The McCain campaign did not fill out the HSLF presidential questionnaire, and has also not issued any public statements on animal welfare issues. He was silent during the downed animal scandal and beef recall, which played out during a high-point in the primary fight. Yet he did speak at the NRA convention earlier this year, and is the keynote speaker this weekend in Columbus, Ohio, at the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance rally—an extremist organization that defends the trophy hunting of threatened polar bears and captive shooting of tame animals inside fenced pens.

While McCain’s positions on animal protection have been lukewarm, his choice of running mate cemented our decision to oppose his ticket. Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R-Alaska) retrograde policies on animal welfare and conservation have led to an all-out war on Alaska’s wolves and other creatures. Her record is so extreme that she has perhaps done more harm to animals than any other current governor in the United States.

Palin2 Palin engineered a campaign of shooting predators from airplanes and helicopters, in order to artificially boost the populations of moose and caribou for trophy hunters. She offered a $150 bounty for the left foreleg of each dead wolf as an economic incentive for pilots and aerial gunners to kill more of the animals, even though Alaska voters had twice approved a ban on the practice. This year, the issue was up again for a vote of the people, and Palin led the fight against it—in fact, she helped to spend $400,000 of public funds to defeat the initiative.

What’s more, when the Bush Administration announced its decision to list the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, Palin filed a lawsuit to reverse that decision. She said it’s the “wrong move” to protect polar bears, even though their habitat is shrinking and ice floes are vanishing due to global warming.

The choice for animals is especially clear now that Palin is in the mix. If Palin is put in a position to succeed McCain, it could mean rolling back decades of progress on animal issues.

Voters who care about protecting wildlife from inhumane and unsporting abuses, enforcing the laws that combat large-scale cruelties like dogfighting and puppy mills, providing humane treatment of animals in agriculture, and addressing other challenges that face animals in our nation, must become active over the next six weeks to elect a president and vice president who share our values. Please spread the word, and tell friends and family members that an honest assessment of the records of the two presidential tickets leads to the inescapable conclusion that Obama-Biden is the choice for humane-minded voters.

Paid for by Humane Society Legislative Fund and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

19. Question About the Wonderful Obama-With-Dog Picture
That picture of Obama with a dog, in front of the Lincoln Memorial--is it real, or put together afterward? What was it taken for, if real? It is absolutely beautiful, so moving, as if the dog is our human equal and we will make a society for their good, too; we are all on the level of the freed oppressed. It gives it a real seriousness that is wonderful. Like Lincoln's remark (can't remember exact wording at the moment) that, "I care not for any one's religion, whose dog or cat is not the better for it," or like those beautiful pictures of EMS technicians giving oxygen to a patient rescued from a house fire--and it is a dog or cat, and the EMS worker is as serious and concerned as if it were a human. That is a real human being, one who has learned from animals the compassion, slowness, contentment, fairness, that we may lack.

Really nice to know that Obama-Biden have their actual endorsement, too; this issue counts with many people, including me.

Obama posed with Baby in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. -- a fitting backdrop, says Kohl, because Lincoln was an animal lover.

Thank you so much for taking a serious issue and turning it into sarcasm.

That's exactly WHY we have a disgraceful homeless issue in this nation.

62. You can call it whatever "belittling" name you wish...
The fact remains that animals are held in higher regard in this country than people.

That's WHY homelessness remains a disgrace in this nation.

61. How exactly would you have us do that?
Can I give some organization a hundred bucks and take one home with me?

I resent the implication that because I have rescued a dog from imminent death, that I couldn't possibly be doing anything to try to end homelessness and poverty.

Homelessness and poverty are more complicated issues to resolve however many of us are capable of multi-tasking.

63. Sarcasm settles NOTHING.
Actually, there ARE ways to "adopt" a homeless person, the same as there are ways to "adopt" a stretch of highway..... by reaching out to help.

More importantly, there are MANY ways to ACTIVELY change the lack of low-income housing in this country. But efforts to get people to take action here on DU rate low, and get few responses.

Unlike the actions for animals.

It's time to take a look at our priorites, while claiming how superior we are because we're "progressives".

64. I didn't start the sarcasm
Getting large numbers of people on DU to do anything more than signing an online petition is laughable. That doesn't mean a whole lot of people here don't already donate their time, money and energy to fighting all sorts of worthy battles.

Really, I know where this conversation is going to go, so I'm out. Go ahead and slander my humanity as if you know who I am and what I do. I'll keep spending my time and money to help all who are more vulnerable than I - both human and animal.

65. Interesting that YOU"RE accusing me of "slander" when I asked a simple question
having to do with the lop-sided preference for animals as opposed to people.

At the very time when Katrina people were killing themselves because they had nowhere to go and no way to survive, there was a HUGE effort to "recue" the animals and give them homes, and a big bundle of money going to that end.

Yes, there should be enough for both animals and people in the richest country in the world, but there is NOT.

The animals get much more concern, and I find that disgusting.

There... you wanted me to use a judgemental term... there it is. Disgusting that animals count for more than people.

83. Hey you!
I've been hanging around mostly in the Pets forum or - get this - the Lounge! Ack! The negativity, anger and fear on display in the "Big Forums" is getting to me so I usually just lurk, begin a rant, delete it and move on. Better for the blood pressure. :)

How's the family?

87. Yes and no
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 10:34 AM by lukasahero
Luckily she wasn't actually on the beach but it's the same problem all over Puerto Rico.

She was rescued by a nun (using her own money) from a tractor-trailer depot when she was about 3 mos. She was frightened, starving, full of parasites and already scarred (across her back and around one of her eyes). She weighs a whopping 35 lbs now at 7 mos - I can't imagine how small she was when she got those scars. I freakin' hate people sometimes. But she is such a joy - her ability to bounce back and trust people is inspiring.

PS - I'll be watching for pictures!

71. You're very welcome.
And I WILL continue to post about homeless people wherever and whenever it is appropriate.

If all of YOU would get in gear and lobby for low-income housing, it would be very welcome, and would change this whole scenario.

If you bother to check the rules, you will see that there is NOTHING about keeping to any particular topic. I've had important threads about poverty hi-jacked, and it was of no matter to anyone.

Deal with it.

78. If it's happend to your threads...
...then you should know how it feels (not pleasant). Does that give you the right to do it to someone else? There may not be a "rule" against it, but it's common courtesy. Don't be offended, then, if people get upset and tell you so.

There's room for more than one topic at DU. We all have our overriding issue of greatest concern, we all surely think that our issue is by far more important than any other, and can back it up with reasoned arguement and personal experience - but only boors go around inserting it into other topics as though nothing else should exist. You're doing your issue no favors that way. I've read your posts for some time, and honestly, your combativeness, your constant seeking out a fight, your immediate taking of offense and tossing out insults even to people who are trying to reach out to you, turns people away from the very important matters you're trying to advocate for. I expect a similar response to this post (if one at all), but perhaps you might take a step back and think about that.

51. I only rescue 'em
I have a dog & 2 cats that have all been rescued. One cat had half its face torn off and was near starvation when my daughter brought her home. The other cat and dog were in a foster home by a kind animal hospital worker who did that. Sadly the dog has pancreas problems at the young age of 3 and it has cost a LOT of money to diagnose and treat. But he is doing better now.

52. I run an animal rescue, and I'd be ever so proud
to adopt one of mine to Obama.

Shout out to those that have adopted a rescue, but also:

Shout out to the rescuers, the volunteers, the donors, the supporters. No shelter nor rescue exists without them

Lastly, a special shout out to the folks on the ground that...well, do what they do.

55. I got a rescue dog - he was a seven year old hearing assist dog
and he's now eight. The only bad thing I can say about my Oly is he will die of old age way too soon. I've never had a better dog. He's a giant poodle of endless love and affection and he's a huge gallump (goofy guy). One of my favorite things about him is how he gets so attached to toys. Today, my hubby gave him a stuffed animal, nothing special, but he's carrying it all over the house. He can't go anywhere without it. Teh cute!
