Bear's Sandwich Shop Encounter Caught On Camera
http://www.kirotv.com/news/17615732/detail.html

Video at the link.

KITIMAT, B.C. -- Surveillance footage from Kitimat, B.C., shows a bear wandering into a sandwich shop and then jumping over the counter and searching for food.

The video shows what appears to be a young bear pushing open the door to the shop and then walking inside. Another camera shows the startled look on the clerk's face before she runs away.

The bear then jumped over the counter and explored the sandwich preparation area. Eventually, the bear left the same way it entered.

Wildlife agents called in by police said they feared such a bold animal could be dangerous to humans and the bear was killed.

OK, the video of the bear coming into the shop is a hoot, it looked for a minute like he was coming in to order a sandwich. Then it looked like he was going to prepare a sandwich for any customers who happened to come in.

I don't blame the clerk at all for running, I certainly would have. Well, maybe I would have backed out.

I don't like the fact that they killed the bear, I don't think it even had contact with any humans, but it is a bit disturbing that he could just walk into the shop.

1. Killed the bear???
WTF???? That was 100% completely unnecessary. The proper way to deal with a bear like that is either removal, and then release to a more suitable location, or the use of aversion techniques. No reason to shoot the bear. Aversion techniques can work wonders with bears -- the idiots up in BC ought to try it sometime instead of reaching for the gusn right away.

2. Rogue bears are very dangerous. They have to have some way of identifying them. And lack
of fear of humans is one way they do. Every year there are terrible maulings in Canada. Normally a black bear would steer clear of humans and human communities. This one didn't. It is sad but I'll leave it to the experts to decide how to manage wildlife.
