Vatican official attacks U.S. Democrats as “party of death”
Vatican officials seldom single out political leaders who differ with the Church on issues like abortion rights or embryonic stem cell research. But now that the Vatican’s highest court is led by an American, the former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, we can expect things to get more explicit in Vatican City — at least when when it comes to U.S. politics.

Burke, who was named prefect of the Vatican’s Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature in June, told the Italian Catholic newspaper Avvenire that the U.S. Democratic Party risked “transforming itself definitively into a party of death for its decisions on bioethical issues.” He then attacked two of the party’s most high profile Catholics — vice presidential candidate Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — for misrepresenting Church teaching on abortion.

He said Biden and Pelosi, “while presenting themselves as good Catholics, have presented Church doctrine on abortion in a false and tendentious way.”

2. Burke singlehandedly turned off Catholics in St. Louis
I have many Catholic relatives in St. Louis. They can't stand Burke.

5. Considering the Church had no policy on abortion until the 1860's
And how many people died when "put to the question" along with the Crusades, they'd be better off keeping their mouth shut about "party of death".

6. But dubya is all for death penalty without proper review and kills people in war!
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 08:47 AM by cmt928
He even makes fun of and laughs at clemancy requests - reads only about a paragraph of report before he signs order to execute, considers killing of innocents in war as collateral damage or "mistake".

And they don't take care of the babies born into poverty!

Jesus! Is the vatican really relevant anymore? Most Catholics I know just shrug at the whole Vatican/Pope thing.

11. He doesn't speak for all Catholics. Don't condemn those of us who understand
that the message from God is getting *scrambled* through the Patriarchal "fear mongering" Organization of The Catholic Church.

IMNSHO, The Catholic Faith is beautiful and valid - but "the humans" who take the reins of leadership are IMPERFECT.

BTW, It's only been within the past year or so that "the powers that be" within The Catholic Church relented the notion that "unbaptized babies" went to *HEAVEN* and not some amorphous black hole entitled *LIMBO.* :eyes:

Too much fear-mongering in the PRACTICE of many of our beloved Catholic Faith instead of following the teachings of Jesus. :(

14. Time to push back. . .
Does anyone know if he had any public statements on the prevalent child abuse lawsuits against priests? Secondly, if his remarks are repeated publicly within churches in the US, and we'll need our Catholic friends here, let's report them to the IRS. Politics is a contact sport!

15. I find it sad that the Vatican singles out the Democrats for criticism
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 09:00 AM by oktoberain
because they disagree with us on abortion and stem cell research, but don't do the same for the Republican party, even though the Repukes are gung-ho about the death penalty, war, and ignoring the plight of the poor.

I'm waiting for the day when liberal American Catholics get tired of the political hypocrisy and break away. It's one thing to oppose an issue, but it's an entirely different thing to oppose an entire party--the ONLY party I might add that even makes a vague attempt at doing the actual "Work of Christ" to relieve suffering and tend to the needy and destitute.

The Repukes bring about more death and suffering with their Me-First, Fuck-You, Bang-Bang policies than we ever could on our WORST day.

For shame.

21. I agree with you there.
I personally can't imagine being a woman in a faith that undervalues women. It must be incredibly frustrating.

Oh well. I could honestly care less what religions other people choose to adhere to, so long as they aren't trying to force their religious dogma on everyone else. That's the point of conflict between me and churches. They're so freaking sure they've got a corner on "truth" that they're willing to try and force everyone else to live by their rules too--the First Amendment be damned.

I'm grateful that all of the Catholics I personally know are reasonable, kind people who don't buy into that sort of thinking.

23. Here here! Let's do it. I'm sick of the Vatican and its
delusional inhabitants trying to control the lives of people who don't give a crap about what they think. It's bad enough that they attempt to intimidate their own membership.
