all kinds of people had to be bought off, to get them to vote yes for the new bailout bill

this hurt McCain, who has approved the bailout while hypocritically posing as against pork

1. It's an openly-discussed fact that the pork is in there to to make it palatable to...
...Republicans. And, so far, I haven't heard any of them deny it.

2. Shame on the Senators who voted no on "principle" and yes when they got pork.
No principles there.

3. The arrow business...
Edited on Thu Oct-02-08 06:08 PM by Davis_X_Machina
...is not pork. It's fixing an earlier legislative mistake.

Hunting equipment, and fishing tackle, are both subject to decades-old excise taxes, the revenue raised is intended to pay for the acquisition and management of habitat, for warden personnel, wildlife science, etc. connected with hunting and fishing.

But these arrows aren't used for hunting. They shouldn't be subject to the .39 per shaft tax. Most of them cost less than the .39 -- they're toys

There's a reason why dyed diesel, for off-road (farm) use is cheaper than undyed diesel. The tax on the undyed diesel, for over the road use, goes into the highway trust fund.

The non-hunting arrows in question are exactly analogous to dyed diesel. Unlike dyed diesel, they can't even be diverted. They've been swept up into an excise net to pay for a resource they don't impact.

Some staffer drafting legislation never conceived of a non-hunting arrow even existing, and wrote the law to his pre-conception. Probably figured all toys are made in China anyways.

Fixing an unintended consequence isn't the same thing as a bribe. It's good government.

5. B.S. You can't deny it.
It's just another handout to Big Toy Arrow. The wooden children's arrow industry has gotten a free ride from taxpayers for far too long.

7. We use Kerosene (undyed) for our ventless heater
Its a modular type home that has a fireplace..but its a toy.
We cannot use dyed kero or diesel for that matter, so we have to pay taxes to heat with it is for off road use?
We are kind of strapped or we would put in a wood stove or heater, but for Modular home is the same as a mobile home you have to jump through hoops to get clearance to install one.
Maybe we won't be so broke next year and can afford it then.
We have a heat pump but it is only good down to about 25 degrees.
Just curious about the taxes on heating oil.
The cost of Kero has gone from 1.49 a gallon to 4.00 a gallon in a little over 2 years.
We have / are doing things to improve the insulation of the house.
When we first moved in here it took 3 gallons a day to heat 2,000 sf house, with sealing
holes and such we have cut what we use in kero on very cold days down to about a gallon on very cold days. I realize I am off topic, but wanted to explain why I wanted to know.
