McCain responding to question about healthcare: "I've never been an astronaut..." WTF???????
Edited on Thu Oct-02-08 08:02 AM by KzooDem
When asked to respond about how he has been covered by federally financed health care for his career, he inserts the sentence "Ummmm....so...and I have never been an astronaut, but I think I know the challenges of space"

I've been pooh-poohing the claims of people saying this man is losing it mentally, but upon watching this interview, I'm buying stock in that claim. The man is fucking bat shit off his rocker. Watch for yourself...it's nausea inducing. It's at the 50-second mark :

1. I was trying to figure out what he was trying to say also
He's sounding a little like Palin.

2. he thought he was running againstt John Glenn?
maybe?

it was a bizarre moment, and he lied too... because as a former POW and purple heart winner he is automatically 100% disabled for the VA, and besides that he retired from the Navy, so he was covered there too

3. he's just a tad confused
Edited on Thu Oct-02-08 08:05 AM by Clovis Sangrail
it seems he has a stock list of 'pithy' comments for various situations and gets a little mixed up as to which ones to use in the particular situation.
If you listen to his speeches you'll hear him do it a fair amount.

4. The Republican strategy: Baffle 'em with bullshit
Look at Palin's response to Katie Couric's question to name the newspapers or magazines she reads: an extended diatribe about how Alaska isn't as isolated as unnamed other people think it is. If you look at the clip again, you can see the :wtf: look cross Couric's face, but she doesn't interrupt.

When I watched that interview I seen the wtf look on Courics face early on and it never left

15. I saw that too. Katie sort of looked off to the side. You could almost read her mind:
"Wow...she really IS dumber than a box of rocks." The look on her face strikes me as being one of contempt, as opposed to pity.

5. He often appears really confused
I have been of the opinion that his mental health has been deteriorating for a while now.

6. Palin thinks the bailout is about healthcare and McCain thinks healthcare is about astronauts...
Edited on Thu Oct-02-08 08:11 AM by GloriaSmith
Why not just cut out the middle man and bailout the astronauts? There. Healthcare solved. Next question?

7. does that mean if Putin ever rears his head in space
...we'll have health insurance?

How about:

I'm not an nuclear scientist, but my body is made up of atoms so I think I know the challenges of stuffing 10-lbs of bush*t into a 2-lb soundbite.

9. I've tried to find an unedited clip of this interview but I can't. Does anyone have one?
Edited on Thu Oct-02-08 08:13 AM by KzooDem
I'm all for painting this man as bat shit crazy, but this is an edited clip. I'm almost wondering if it was edited at that point to make it sound like that was his final answer?

Maybe he was saying he isn't an astronaut but understands the challenges, so even though he's got health insurance guaranteed by the government he understands the challenges of those who do not?

Quite frankly, I wouldn't believe THAT line out of him, either, but one has to hope there was more to that particular discussion than what that clip illustrates. If not, and this was his complete statement on that question, I'm calling my physician and asking for a Xanax script! :-)

I'm not a McCain supporter, but on the other hand I don't want to misrepresent what the man really said, even though I may not agree with his complete answer anyway.

Anyone have a complete clip of his interview?

11. I, too, was baffled by this, until I read it to mean that just because he's
always had taxpayer-funded health care doesn't mean he doesn't understand the difficulties of people who don't...although I'm not sure that was the question.

13. I think that's what he meant too and I think he's very wrong.
I don't think he has a clue how hard it is to not have access to affordable healthcare. I'm not sure anyone can truly understand exactly how bad it is until they either experience it first hand or watch someone close to them go through it.

17. Yeah, he was thinking how the question could be used against him.
So unbeknown to the casual view he thought that question would indicate he didn't understand what the public was going through with their health care and spouted out with that line. But he didn't get the full import of the question right. By saying that he had government insurance his whole life it was more of 'why cant the rest of the US have that' subtext.

This answer doesn't show batshit crazy, but it does show that he is worrying more about how questions will be spun than how he is explaining them. And it shows he isn't paying that much attention to the flow of his spoken word.

20. Crazy talk !!!
I just watched a clip of this on TPM.

Here is the quote from the clip - and catch what he said right after the astronaut bit :

"And I have never been an astronaut but I think I know the challenges of space and I've never done a lot of things in my life that I think I am familiar with ... "

(and don't forget, he was a POW, he got that in : wink, wink : at the end)

So, that experience thing isn't so important anymore? Talk about playing both sides!
