Once more we are having what is, in essence, the Paulson Plan shoved down our throat, only this time with extra added tax cuts. Yes, it comes with a codicil on wind and renewables and ups the FDIC limit, temporarily. Still and all, it is a plan that is laying out an enormous sum of money in a manner that doesn't address the root causes of this economic crisis, merely throws more money onto the bonfire. Worse, it will fatally cripple our economy for decades to come.
There is no doubt that we do need a solution to this crisis. But this continued repackaging of the same old disaster plan is not cutting it. We need a better way forward, one that restores stability yes, but also addresses the real needs of people in this country who are facing their own personal disaster. For now, any plan that is put forth will have to be a band-aid measure, something that will hold until, hopefully, wiser heads enter office enact some long term solutions. It took us a long while to get to this point, it's going to take a long time to get out. But that doesn't mean we should jump at any bailout thrown at us.
So now is the time to stand up and say "we want a better deal". On Monday the people collectively, and correctly, rejected the imperious demand that Bushco put forth. Bush's own actions caught up with him, and the American people finally realized that they shouldn't trust this man. Therefore, that plan needs to come from somewhere else, and that is the House itself. They need to be the ones to take charge and craft a plan that will be that band aid we need, both for Wall St. and for Main St.
That is where we the people come in. If you want a better deal, contact your Representative now. Tell them to once again do the right thing and reject this latest incarnation of the Paulson plan. Tell them that it is up to them to do their job, show leadership on this and craft a real plan. It's a month before their quadrennial audit, they're willing to listen, for once. Let's take advantage of it and get a better deal.
