Is Ohio's new voting system really leading to fraud?
Ohioans can now register and vote on the same day (I think it's for one week only). I hear there's a right wing talking point that this has already led to unqualified people casting votes in the early voting this week (i.e. some have been caught, I guess). I don't understand how that can be if you have to show a photo ID to vote. Anybody know how this fraud, if it really exists, is accomplished?

I got into a discussion today with someone who listens to right wing radio and this is what she told me; I didn't know any facts to rebut it and so far my google search terms aren't delivering the info I need.

Any help you folks can provide would be appreciated.

1. Straw Man Argument by the right wing
the people who are voting early are legal voters .... the right wing
will say that they are homeless crackheads that are being paid for
their votes.

The real fraud in Ohio was Ken Blackwell in 2004 among others.

3. The person I was talking to said something about pulling info out of phone books.
I live in Ohio and have heard nothing about this before today -- and I'm doubting there's anything to it. I just wish I knew something factual to back up that belief.

2. These laws were made with a Rethuglican legislature.
Now that we have a Dem Governor and Dem SOS they don't like the laws and feel that the law should be changed. Go figure.

4. The republicans are also active in the
exact same process. My in laws in Ohio, who are republican, they got an email addressing them volunteering to get OSU kids to the rapid vote...stuff like that.

So, they are just as happy as the democrats and are equally utilizing the opportunity. This is fair for all,.

5. I can't answer your specific question about Ohio
but I get really angry at those self-righteous Republicans who are so concerned about voter fraud.

When I registered to vote in Alabama, I had to take a "literacy" test. I remember that I didn't know the answer to some of the questions, and I was surprised when I "passed." How naive. I was white so it didn't matter if I didn't know the answers.

Later when the Civil Rights Act passed and the literacy test was made illegal, my husband and I drove some blacks to the Court House to register to vote. The sheriff followed us from the Court House to our apartment. I'm sure he hoped to intimidate us.

Those same people who complain about voter fraud do everything they can to keep legitimate voters from being able to vote. Just look at how legitimate voters had their names removed from the polls in Florida in 2000!!

8. I'm a pollworker in Ohio for Nov. 4...
and can say that these early ballots are put into individual envelopes with the voter's information on the exterior. That data is used to confirm the voter's registration and thus whether the ballot is valid. It is then held at the BoE and not opened and counted until Nov.4. This is for op-scan counties. I'm not certain how or if there are any touch-screen-only counties; I don't think so. In any case, I believe that a paper copy is required. Sorry I can't expound accurately on those systems.
