The six-year-old newspaper, whose backers once included Conrad Black, had reportedly grown its advertising revenue but not enough to offset losses which its editor described as "substantial".
Seth Lipsky, the Sun's president and editor, said a three-week search for new financial backers had failed.
He told the newspaper's 100-strong staff that the decision to shut down followed a "hard-headed assessment of our chances of meeting our goal of profitable publication in the near future".
"Among other problems that we faced was the fact that this month, not to mention this week, has been one of the worst in a century in which to be trying to raise capital," he added.
