The numbers tell you everything you need to know. The Repukes wanted to make sure that this extremely unpopular bailout plan was blamed on the Democrats. So nearly two-thirds of them voted against it. Democrats, not being completely stupid, refused to go along with this and so enough voted against it to cause it to fail.

In other words, the Repukes knew they had caused the mess but refused to clean it up - instead favoring political cover.

If even a simple majority of Republicans had voted for the plan, Democrats would have followed suit.

It's clear where the fault lies.

1. Can we stop with the blame & concentrate on writing a new bill the people might support?
Isnt that how Democracy is supposed to work?

It was a bad bill (admit it, it was basically still Bush's version), its a good thing it went down to defeat.

Now write one without Bush's blessing that actually helps more than just the wealthy bankers.

8. It was a bill written..
hastily, with both sides agreeing because of the urgency. I like what Barney said. Many people thought this bill was unnecessary..we'll see.

3. Yep--Democrats knew the GOPers were hoping a bigger majority
of Dems voting yea would get the bill over the finish line without risking any more seats on their team, and then they would have proclaimed it the Dem/Bush bill.

4. It took the Republicans 12 years to create this mess.
Now they want to blame it on the Democrats. If they wanted to show true leadership, they should get us out of the mess that they created. Please remind your Republican friends that the Democrats cannot fix everything in 1 1/2 years.

10. I'm proud of the progressive dems who voted against this SCAM.
This is truly not a partisan issue but Libertarians vs Corporate Gov't Control.

12. Well said
Issue of Liberty (regardless of philosophical interpretations of) vs. Slavery is not a partisan issue.

It's a gut feeling issue. Of having guts.

13. 3 of 7 NJ Dems voted no
Rothman, Pascrell, Payne, all in safe Dem districts, so for them it was not seeking cover.
