Bush working the phones ahead of bailout vote

The White House said Monday that President Bush had spent much of the morning calling Republican members of Congress, urging them to support the financial bailout compromise when it comes to a vote later in the day.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said that Bush was still encountering "skepticism" from members, and the administration is "not taking a single vote for granted."

Despite that, Fratto said, the administration does think it has the votes on legislation "that's critical to our country's economic future."

Fratto said Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other administration officials have been calling members, and they are not surprised that they are encountering some resistance.

"We're not surprised there's some skepticism out there," Fratto said.

Fratto warned that the compromise reached over the weekend "is not a perfect bill."

"Anyone looking for a perfect bill won't find it," Fratto said.
