Just called 911 on an asshole trying to intimidate me on the road
He came up behind me and tailgated me for a couple miles. He kept getting closer and closer to my bumper and at two different red lights, he inched so close to me that I thought he was going to hit me. I went exactly the speed limit the whole time. Finally, he sped around me, honked and yelled "asshole!" at me.

So I called 911 and gave the dispatcher a description of his car and tag number. She asked if I felt threatened and I said yes, definitely. She said she had an officer in the area and would alert him.

I have several bumper stickers on my car.

PROUD PATRIOTIC AMERICAN LIBERAL

WHEN BUSH TOOK OFFICE GAS WAS $1.46

OBAMA 08

$720 MILLION A DAY IN IRAQ
HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT?

It's going to be a long 6 weeks before the election here in red state hell.

Oh and today is my birthday and it had been a wonderful day until this road raged asshole tried to ruin it. How I HATE these people.

82. My funniest road rage story
Only once did it get so bad that the guy cornered me and then came out of his SUV.

My crime: leaving my side street and merging into a very busy 2-lane street, with a 45mph limit, on which he was going about 65. Oh and yes, driving one of those "gay" little Japanese economical cars. I tried to gun it as much as I can and even if my car can do the 0-60 in 9", it was still too slow for him and he tailgated me for a good 100 yards.

Finally, he passed and blocked me in the left turn lane, came out of his SUV, started walking towards me.

Him: 5'8", 200lbs, not in shape, probably would not be able to give one pushup even if his life depended on it.

So I decided to get out myself, just to have a bit of fun.

Me: 6', 210lbs, in shape (I used to play Rugby forward, I like to maintain it a bit), fresh flat top from 2 days earlier, sports shade, Robocop walk.

He got scared and yelled "Don't touch me!!! I'm a cop!" I asked him why he acted the way he did, and asked him to show me his badge. He said "Ok, let me get my badge!". He jumped in his SUV and took off.

I swear, each time I tell this story, people have that expression of disbelief on their faces and most do not believe me.

Close to 40 MPG, zero major mechanical failures, besides the AC compressor which blew when my stepson was driving it (no clue what he did).

90. parking lot rage---
I did this once when I was a bit younger and foolisher--
not sure I would ever do it gain-- but I was trying to get out of a busy mall parking lot
and had to make a left turn across busy traffic without a light. Was holding up some impatient
A-hole in a big pickup truck behind me who started blasting his horn at me.

I found myself getting of my small car right there and walking towards him. He was hanging out
the window swearing at me as he saw me get out, as that was the last thing he was expecting. A
woman half his size coming toward him.

I said "I have an idea. Let's trade places since you can see the traffic so damn much better than me.
You go up there and drive my car and--- I'll get in yours and sit here honk your horn for you!"
I'll never forget the pissed look on his face. But he shut up and knocked it off, and he eventually got
out. After I got out.

Again, I wouldn't do that again today, and these days I'll make a turn with the traffic and go a bit
out of my own way, far more often than not, but I'd give anything for a picture for that jerk's
slack-jawed surprise.

13. What was the speed limit?
I have a road near my house that is 25mph. I always go 25 since there are kids around. But some people try to use it as a short cut and they tailgate and swerve around me all the time. I almost died last week when I tried to take a left onto my street a guy in a pickup truck behind me tried passing me on my left. I drive a 95 civic. Luckily I saw him at the last second otherwise I might not be here.

I have no bumper stickers.

22. Sorry Proud2Bib, but look at it this way
You encountered some jerk who was completely out of his mind with anger more than likely, and needs some help. You stood your ground, and even though you may have been scared or intimidated you didn't give the loser the satisfaction of engaging in his mindless, and dangerous aggression. I sure wish I had your composure. I would have already put my front quarter panel in his rear quarter panel and spun him around like a top and been on my way before I could have dialed 911. So thanks for standing your ground.

31. He Had Already Sped Away And Then You Called 911? Sounds Like A Waste Of Emergency Resources To Me.
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 09:31 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Yes, he was an asshole, and yes, he may have been harassing you due to your bumper stickers. But since he had already gone around you and sped away, do I think for a second that you believed you were in danger? No, I don't. 911 calls should be made in emergencies only.

And on edit: If you thought you were in such danger, why did you let him tailgate you for several miles, sit behind you at two red lights, and wait until after he passed you to call 911?

65. Please Address The Issue For Me, If You Can.
No, my post wasn't an attack. It's a reasonable reply with real logic. Our emergency services should be relegated to emergencies. If this was an emergency, and not just some personal retaliation for someone who pissed you off, then can you tell me why you waited for miles, two red lights and until AFTER he sped off and passed you to call 911? Should be easy enough to answer I would think.

I look forward to another explanation that might actually work.

Cause, like, if I was really threatened and felt the situation was an emergency, I wouldn't have been able to grab my phone quickly enough once I hit a red light.

112. have you seriously ever been in this kind of emergency, OMC, because it sure don't sound like it!
sorry to tell you but guess what, when a fuckhead is stalking you, and you are operating a motor vehicle, it is not that easy to duck under the windshield, find the purse, find the phone, punch in the number, and meanwhile the light has changed and the fuckwit is getting closer...

having been in similar situations myself then i think we need to trust the victims that they do the right thing and that they are able to get on the cell and phone as soon as it is safe to do so

sometimes it is more important to keep one's eye on the fuckwit, at the red light, it can be that you would need to go ahead and run the red light -- you need to have an awareness of what is happening at the intersection and ALSO what is happening behind you -- not always possible to do this AND fumble around looking for a phone

been there, done that, got the tee shirt w.out causing a car wreck

there is always someone there to tell the victim that "you shouldn't a worn that dress" but you weren't there and she was and based on my experience of similar situations i think she did the right thing

i guess we could all drive around w. phones in our hands in anticipating of needing to call 911 on a crazy but then that's dangerous and in some states illegal too, isn't it?

107. Seems to me that...
Seems to me that the feeling of being threatened was a gradual process-- as it is in many, many cases. Seems to me that calling 9-11 the very second the situation began would have been somewhat premature as it could have been nothing more than a momentarily distracted driver.

I also think that, after having witnessed the erratic and non-caring nature of the driver for sometime, the OP might have possibly thought that the driver in question would continue to be a safety hazard for other drivers on the road, and thus called 911 to alert them of a dangerous presence on the road.

I fail to see how anyone (other than the tail-gater himself) would have a problem with seeing an aggressive, most-likely dangerous driver become an interest to local law enforcement.

Par for the course. Some people just don't have it in them to empathize or even pretend to do so. It has nothing to do with you--it's all about their own serious problems.

Sorry I forgot to wish you happy birthday earlier!

Edited to add: I have found that with hopeless cases, that "ignore" is a very useful tool. There are some people who just are not worth listening to, who never have anything positive to contribute, who seem to be here only to drag others down to their own miserable level. IMO, it's not good to engage these people, and it will never be productive to you or them. Usually these people are well known. Please do not stress yourself over these "Falling Down" types.

68. Let's Try You On For Size Then. Can You Answer The Question?
First, do you agree that 911 should be reserved for actual emergencies?

Second, if you do, then can you tell me why if this was an actual emergency that the OP waited for miles, two red lights, and until after the perp sped away and passed her to call 911? I await your reply.

Why did the OP wait for several miles, through two red lights, and until after this person sped away to call 911 if she felt so threatened? Does that make sense to you? It doesn't to me, but to each their own.

Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 10:38 PM by WillyT
for the adrenaline to subside, and for her to think straight?

Maybe she didn't want to take her hands off the wheel while he was on her ass, and so could not make the phone call BEFORE he went around her?

Look dude... my sister got sliced in the arm and stabbed twice in the back for not dancing with a guy at a bar many years ago. He waited in the parking lot, in the shadows, until she came out.

And while the two stories may seem like apples and oranges, they in some respects are not.

You never know what sets some freaks off, what their intentions are, and what they are capable of.

And unfortunately, thinking rationally is one of the first things to go when you get into a "fight or flight" situation.

And there were cars parked along the street. It wouldn't have been safe to pull over. Besides, I was going exactly the speed limit in a city where cops are well known for pulling you over if you go even a couple miles over. It's a low crime suburb. Nothing but traffic offenses for cops to be involved in.

There was no reason for him to be on my bumper for the length of time he was unless he was trying to intimidate me. Especially the way he inched up at me at the lights. I wasn't doing anything wrong. He was just an asshole.

Road rage is so prevalent in NC, especially if you are Blue Inspired! Sorry you had such a scare on what should have been a great day for you. I remember in 2004 I came home from registering voters at the Catawba Co. Fair at the Democratic booth and when I told my BIL where I'd been and what I'd been doing he shot off his assault rifle behind my house all afternoon. I literally laid on the floor so he couldn't get me 'accidentally on purpose'. He ruined two tires on our car that week! Anyway, you are brave and I'm glad you called the police and reported him. If it was my BIL, I hope the throw his ass in jail! Congratulations on Obama taking the lead in the polls there today! That's a pretty good present! Chin up, hon. It'll be better before you know it.

someone is sniffing my bumper. I drive OVER the speed limit in the right lane, they have ample room to pass me, and yet they TAILGATE me!!!!! I put on my flashers, beep my horn, and take my foot off the accelerator, and yet they CONTINUE TO TAILGATE me.

I think they're just venting anger on strangers. It's very, very dangerous. Half the road is full of tailgaters. No one wants to drive by the rules anymore. The worst tailgaters are cops, too.

And to the rest of you here who don't know Proud2Blib's part of the world, she would have been driving through a fairly upper-class Republican area. (Were you on 119th? That's my guess)Very white, very Republican. It's exactly the neighborhood and people Thomas Frank is talking about in his book What's the Matter With Kansas. The density of SUVs has to be seen to be believed. And the Hummers! I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't more of them per capita in Johnson County, Kansas, than anywhere else in the country.

And the crime rate really is so low that she would have done the local police a favor to give them something to do on an otherwise slow Sunday.

If the driver is tailgating me and being an ass about it here's what I'd do, and what I do.

1st)wave at him to back off your bumper
if he's still there
2nd)wave again so that incase he's an idiot and didn't catch it the first time he'll see it again
if he's still there
3rd)stand your car on it's nose
If he hits you he is 100% at fault. What? You mean you didn't see the dog/deer/whatever in the road? Sucks, you shouldn't have been all over my ass.

103. Sorry but your 3rd answer is stupid
Why get your car damaged and risk injury to yourself? Also remember the rear is where the gas tank is located, you got some risk of getting trapped in your car in a fire if that tank explodes or leaks.

And no, when you do that it is not 100% his fault. You can get tagged as well if its proven you stopped on purpose contributing to the accident.

127. I would slow down so they would have to cross the double yellow line if they wanted to pass me.
If they are going to break a law, might as well break that one instead of making you upset and crash.

I know how you feel though. These are just suggestions for the future, not to make you regret your decisions that you have already made.

I live very near Shades of Death Road. It's very scary driving at night on many of the surrounding roads, especially when you don't know where you are going.

I was just thinking of requesting the county to change the name of the road to my name. Maybe people will just ignore Erik Blaine Anderson road because it's so boring, and they won't drive hundreds of miles with so-called "paranormal equipment" and steal the signs we need if we have to call 911 and tell the operator where we are.

Warm Regards,
Erik

124. Oooh! How foolish of you!
Driving in VA with DC tags! Just a little irony.

Proud2b lives in Johnson County, Kansas, the wealthiest and most envied county in Kansas. Because Kansas notes the county on its tags, it can sometimes feel as if you'll get ticketed just for having JOCO tags elsewhere in the state. And, as shocking as it sometimes is to some Kansans, not everyone in Johnson county is rich and living in a million dollar home.

122. Sadly, in our land of 'freedom of speech', that's the main reason why I don't have a
lot of bumper stickers... but even with just the Obama/Biden one I got a week or so ago, I feel like I'm a target (I'm in TX)... so I'm looking forward to the elec. being over in more ways than one.
