Woman Exposed to Rabies by Drinking Coffee?
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - It wasn't just the caffeine that gave an Iowa woman an extra jolt after she had her morning coffee. It was also the bat she found in the filter. The Iowa Department of Public Health says the woman reported a bat in her house but wasn't too worried about it. She turned on her automatic coffee maker before bedtime and drank her coffee the next morning. She discovered the bat in the filter when she went to clean it that night. The woman has undergone treatment for possible rabies. Health officials say that the bat was sent to a lab but that its brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether it had rabies.

2. Ewwwwww!
How does a bat squeeze into a coffee filter?

BTW I actually like bats. Just not in my morning coffee or in my house.

6. Such a weird story...
First of all, why would they suspect that she had rabies? I guess the bat could have been biting away at the coffee grounds or something... Could the rabies be just like, on the bat's body or something? Is rabies a brain thing? Is that how they determine whether or not an animal has rabies or not, by checking out their brain?

Weird... I obviously am no rabies expert.

7. I think the culprit is the bat's saliva
I hope the rabies treatment is less painful and complicated as it once was.

8. Well, once she stops vomiting long enough to make
the trip to the ER, she needs to start the series of rabies shots, just in case.

The chance of her getting rabies from boiled bat is a tiny one, but it's not zero.

The problem with rabies is that only one person I know of has ever survived it. One. That makes it more fatal than the other scary diseases out there like Hantaavirus and Ebola Zaire. It's a hellish way to go.

The shots aren't that bad now. She does need to get them.
