2. Walks her talk
My boss is wonderful. She sets the example for the whole office to follow. She respects and appreciates what we do, and makes it very clear what she wants done, so there's no second guessing. BTW, she works WITHOUT a salary, choosing to donate her services to the Foundation.

4. What my husband's boss does..
Gives him random raises without my husband even realizing it until he notices that his direct deposit has changed:)
and gives him a detailed company balance sheet showing what they made, and then gives him a cash bonus of $1k (10 crisp new Benjamins inside a Christmas card) and on January 1, a check for $15K bonus with taxes withheld:)

and in 2003 he took us along with him and his wife on a free trip to Tahiti..even paid for our passports & gave us $500 in spending money :)

7. Taking institutional needs in mind,
allows and encourages everyone to play to her or his greatest strength, recognizes that they are all part of a community, sees himself or herself as a coordinator. Essentially, the person above you is either a point of a wedge going up, in which case they advocate for their "subordinates," or a point on a wedge going down, in which case they are no more than gofers for those above them. The best "bosses," from my point of view, are the point on the wedges going up.

8. ... be willing and able to do the job of everyone under him/her ...
no boss should be 'above' sitting at a table and stuffing envelopes or crawling under desks and connecting pc's if that's what needs to be done for his/her team to meet a deadline.

9. For me, personally?
At least 10 years of pre relationship in order for me to evaluate them.

Is it a joke? Or simply years of experience? You get to decide.

11. Never ask for "extra" work to be done without working right next to you..
If you're going to ask someone to give extra effort, you have to give extra effort at the same time.

12. Other: leave me the hell alone
That's the best thing about my current job (which is otherwise pretty miserable)...My boss doesn't even WANT to get involved in my affairs, and I like it that way.

13. The best boss I ever had, "You know your job, do that."
And, then he left us alone to do our jobs. No ass kissing, make work, look busy, required.

15. My job and more...
It's so simple-my boss has to at least be capable of doing my job 40+ hrs a week. It's a plus if the boss can do it better while doing other stuff. But until he can replace me he has no business being my boss...

19. I want a boss who can be held accountable by the workers if he breaks the rules.
A boss who is accountable is a good boss. One that is not is potentially and often is an abusive boss.
