106. It's not horseshit.
It's bullshit.

Horseshit is relatively, for shit, inoffensive. I deal with a yard or so every day. No big deal.

Bullshit, on the other hand, is sloppy, stinky, and just a mess.

Calling what McCain is spouting "horseshit" is an insult to good, clean horseshit.

43. as in "of course you think that"
"of course you'd say that...."

On what planet would McCain *not* be able to refrain from swearing during a debate like this?

This is really reaching for something that is totally far-fetched.

And do you really think Obama would NOT saying something in response IF McCain swore? Do you think he'd just keep going and not take advantage of a major slip-up like that? Why wouldn't he say something like, "Hey, John, settle down!"

I know Barack doesn't like to be mean and thinks that he should play nice with others at all times, but if he could just keep pointing out McCain's guffaws at the next debate; this old man would blow a gasket right on national TV. It wouldn't take much more pushing either, Obama almost had him there a couple of times last night.

Which is why I prolly should stay off the Obama debate response team i.e. possible Obama response to almost anything Grandpa PoopyPants says,

"McCain...you're not 'my friend' so give that "horse-shit" a rest old timer. In fact you aren't friends with 75-80% of the people you claim to be friends with unless they're a lobbyist, war monger, war profiteer, or a financial donor now isn't that nearer the truth. As for the drivel that just sputtered out your wrinkled old lips and onto the poddium...you should have blown that BS out your nose instead you wacky old coot; in that it weren't but buggers & snot have you no shame!"

49. "of course" doesn't make sense in the context.
Not when he's looking pissed off, as Obama rips into him.

Think about it. Would McCain actually be agreeing, saying "of course" while Obama is filleting him?

Look at how pissed off he looks. You can tell he's not saying anything agreeable, like "of course".

He's muttering a profanity to himself, something he probably does all the time, and no one paid any attention before. But in a Presidential Debate, everyone is paying attention! Apparently, McCain has an ingrained habit of muttering profanities, and we got to see in on the national stage.

Are you agreeing with me that you are sexist?

He could have been saying "of course you think that..." and got cut off twice.

And if he really did say horseshit, why didn't Obama immediately say something about it? Wouldn't it have been appropriate to point it out?

53. McCain would have brought it up in a rebuttal, then.
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 02:52 PM by quantessd
Do you really think McCain was trying to interrupt Obama with a full sentence, starting with "of course"? Because to me, it did not look like he was intending to grab the spotlight from Obama and start rebutting.

McCain was not intentionally saying "horseshit" to be heard. It's clearly his habit to mutter profanities, and he let it slip Friday.

From Obama's standpoint: do you really think Obama should have stopped his powerful statement about McCain not wanting to meet with the Prime Minister of Spain, to say "excuse me, did you just say horseshit?" (If Obama even noticed McCain mumbled anything).

I was trying to think of the term earlier today. The pre-frontal cortex, if I remember correctly, is where impulses are regulated in the brain. PTSD is one of many causes of reduced impulse control.

87. He's a frickin' sailor for Chrissakes. Would you expect him to say "Doo doo"?
As much as I hate the bastard, I have to give him an attaboy for saying that during a National Presidential Debate.

As a matter of fact, I wish Obama had said horseshit when McAnus said he voted against torture AND veterans LOVE him.

68. So what if he did? That'll just feed into his 'straight talk' meme.
It might be hypocritical and so on, but I doubt anyone here is truly offended by the word in and of itself. Making a fuss about this will be a free ad for McCain. Even if he did say it (something I'm not sure about) and there's unambiguous proof, he'll just say that he was angered by 'Obama's false accusation' or something like that. He's an ex-military guy, known for swearing, and it'll just reinforce his 'tough guy' narrative.

Dump it.

98. So if it's true, we should "dump it"? For the sake of fellow Democrats.
Because we don't want to bolster an already strong Republican straight-talker, is that what you're saying?

But if it isn't true, then "we" made it all up (we're the Loony Left, so I hear). "We" should just drop it, because it will only "make us look bad".

So, either way, we lose. I love concerned DUers.

Just watch and judge for yourself. Figure out the truth first. You republicans can figure out how to spin it, later.

101. That I disagree with you doesn't make me a Republican
You can bang on about this if you want, but it's just be regarded as tinfoil-hattery by most people, and will only reinforce the rabidity of his base. Attacking him over this is a complete waste of time.

Next time you disagree, kindly refrain from distorting what I said.

105. MCCain's base. I thought that was obvious.
Whether McCain said horseshit or not, Obama's needling clearly annoyed him. Rather than going 'ZOMG did he say a bad word', I think what wins for us is to blow it off and let Obama keep rattling him. If he blows his top and swears right out loud in a future debate, that's great for us. If he just grumbles to himself that's still good.

My point is that the 'did he or didn't he' arguments won't make a good impression on the general public, nor will they cause nervousness among GOPers. Far better if Obama can lure him into a more overt public flash of temper, than trying to point out one that may-or-may-not be there.

76. Senator McCain is saying:
"Of course he is."

He was embarrassed. He was caught out in a Palin level gaffe. He didn't know who the President of Spain was, even after his questioner told him!

What to do?

Deny. Rewrite history.

"Of course he is the President of Spain."

Lather. Rinse. Repeat until the low information voter is confused enough to wonder if he ever really made the mistake in the first place. A classic tactic which doesn't work so well in the days of DVRs and Youtube.

This "horseshit" meme is, itself, horseshit.

Can't we discuss the debate on the merits of Senator Obama's stellar performance rather than reaching as low as this? It just makes us look stupid.

77. And you also have to ask
Why would all of the transcripts have the words "of course" in them? None of them have typed out "horseshit" or even "expletive!"

That means every news outlet sharing the debate transcript has changed the word?

How is that possible?

Senator Obama was unintimidable, which may partially explain why he didn't hear the impulsive mumblings from McCain while he was speaking.

Have you seen the video clip? Why are you saying that pointing out the obvious makes us look stupid? Don't you have any idea how stupid Republicans look, in comparison?

Horseshit is one of the best expressions in the English language. Can't imagine giving McCain anything but credit for using it in a Presidential debate. This nation of perfunctory children though... war is a-ok, but cursing is the Devil's right-horn.

Btw, I approve of actual children hearing curse-words and using them. Show me a single, legitimate scientific study proving curse-words damage children.

94. According to Olbermann, he said "course not, course not"
He said he heard it live. From Olbermann:

"It was "course not, course not" -- with his sibilant "s" it sounds like "coursh not, coursh not" -- I heard it live, wearing an ear plug, and I have a pretty good ear.

Of course regardless, even Pat Buchanan thought this was a brilliant ploy by Obama."
