What do you say to the Bob Barr voters?
Do you try to talk them out of it, or encourage them? I have a libertarian friend who I engage in frequent political discussions with, and I'm not sure what tack to take with him.

4. where would you say his ideaology is ?
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 09:56 AM by iamthebandfanman
whats his stance on the issues?

you can go from there...

if he seems pretty republican leaning, then by all means encourage him to vote his heart and vote Barr ;)

you can always use the 'well you know who i think you should vote for, but dont let anybody tell you how to vote! you vote for the guy you like, and if thats bob barr then by all means do it.'

hehe

10. Yeah, I assume most Barr voters are really frustrated Republicans.
There are some left libertarians, but most are conservative Republicans who think their party lost it's way.

18. He's kind of all over the place
typical libertarian, liberal on social issues, free marketeer (but when pressed, believes in some regulation. After this disaster, no surprise), thinks Iraq was a mistake but weirdly defends the Straussians. Claims to be a Straussian, weirdly. He's a real estate guy, hates city/state regs. He's not very consistent, but is a big fan of Cato and other libertarian think tanks.

6. Hey, keep them motivated, do as Barack did in the debate, you know Bob has a good point,
rather or not you really think so. If he is a friend, go out with him and help with some yard signs or something. Remember, in some states that are close, when Barr is in it, Obama actually takes the lead.

7. Tell them I'm voting for Bob Barr too.
At least if I only know them superficially, any who knows me, knows who I'm for. Encourage the hell out them, tell them voting on principle is good and effective.

If you need to elaborate, tell them you respect REAL conservatives and not the plastic tax and spend, big intrusive government NEOconservatives.

11. I tell them that
their guy is one hell of a lot better than the one running on the Republican ticket and then encourage them to get all their like minded friends to work for Barr.

12. Thank you?
Really, anyone voting for Barr was never going to vote for a Democrat so it's just a vote lost for the repubs. Tell them you admire their convictions and move on.

13. I won't insult them by trying to tell them they're wrong about everything

I'll just say vote your conscience. You're Libertarians and like the rest of us you're blessed with the right in this country to cast a vote for whomever you want, to form a party with whomever you agree. Be Libertarians if that's your conviction. If you're worried about what the country will go through at the hands of the two major parties in the next 4 years, and obviously it will still be entirely in the hands of the two major parties who will do much that you Libertarians will disagree with, I'd say simply that four years from now you will probably have a country worth salvaging after Barack Obama is President, but if John McCain is President, you probably won't. John McCain is a dangerously impractical man, consumed by slights to his honor, which he sees coming from every corner of the world, and he's obsessed with settling old scores. Under a McCain Presidency, the disastrous course of the Bush Administration would continue under the same inflexible assumptions, and it would continue to destroy our national strength. McCain fully shares Bush's delusions of omnipotence and his ideas that America can and should be the arbiter of every country's affairs, international or internal. War with Iran is virtually certain with McCain, and though McCain would sell this to the public as the "War to End All Wars" we would find our "ally" in Iraq suddenly attacking our rear and cutting off our line of retreat. Iran is a country of 70 odd million people most of them young. We have absolutely no chance of marching in and imposing a new regime on the Iranian people-none at all. Our own military might revolt at such an order. Far from ending all wars, invading Iran would multiply the number of our enemies as the rubber band of our empire is overdrawn and snaps. Under McCain, since the Perpetual War on Unseen Enemies is guaranteed to continue and may well intensify, the erosion of civil liberties of the Bush years is certain to take on permament status. John McCain is a paranoid who requires the apparatus of an authoritarian state to cover his limitless sense of vulnerability. He will require all of your money to carry out his fight for what he sees as our lost national honor and glory. In order to feel himself prepared to be aggressive abroad, he will be even more repressive at home. If I were a Libertarian I would view him as the worst threat going to what makes -or once made- this country uniquely hospitable to a free life.

17. I'd encourage them
A) It's probably a vote taken away from McCain.

B) Their decision to go to Barr was probably more thought out than somebody who just went to whoever was on the ticket. They weren't drinking the kool-aid.
