Memorial Statue Stolen From Public Library's Grounds
A sad story out of Long Island:

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/suffolk/ny-listat275860346sep27,0,497969.story

Shana Kay was passionate about reading. For that reason, her family decided to commemorate that love after her unexpected death in July 2005 with a bronze statue of a young girl on a bench reading a book. It was installed at her beloved local library.

But overnight Thursday, someone took the statue from the front entrance of Commack Public Library, 18 Commack Rd. It had been bolted and cemented into the ground and weighed as much as 300 pounds...

SNIP

Amid the lagging economy, officials have seen a surge in scrap metal thefts nationwide. With copper prices doubling in the last five years, nothing seems safe. Pipes, mausoleum doors and manhole covers have been boosted by thieves.

4. Yes, supposedly we have a "shortage"
I have a teeny, tiny car, thank God. However, I live in red-county-wing-nut-from-hell county, and the locals are having a harder and harder time blaming this all on the Clenis.

Which, except for the inconvenience it is causing me, generates some amusement.

6. Yes and no...
My BF is afraid, should I put any type of sticker on my car that proclaims my political preferences, I may be harassed and/or killed. I'm a female, and this may be a realistic fear.

Because I'm "white", although not Angle-Saxon or Protestant, it is assumed at work that I am a republican and I have to listen to all sorts of offensive and ignorant drivel. I hate my job and living here but, until the economy straightens out, I am stuck here.

I do let it be known that I am not a Southern Baptist Republican at appropriate times, however.

9. That's Good... getting through to some will change that Dynamic
Nobody should fear for their lives due to political ideology unless that ideology were responsible for deaths, such as Nazism and Fascism....

12. However, when they keep up the meme that, somehow
liberals got us into this mess, I do lose some of my sympathy for them.
