20. Barack did his thing!
Barack stood there and displayed a breadth of knowledge in the foreign policy arena. This was probably the most fundamental thing he wanted to accomplish, and he did it well.

Barack respected his opponent by actually looking at him!

He brilliantly listed when McCain was wrong on Afghanistan, Iraq, et. al with his series of "You were wrong." This could be, or should be, his soundbite of the debate. We'll see if it gets picked up.

This should have been McCain's night, but the best he could do was repeatedly insult Obama's knowledge, "naivete," or that McCain "has been there." These are all things that may have been valuable in debates past, but seems lame this election. We are talking about the next president going forward. The public isn't going to buy that- they want someone who can solve problems, and I think they have learned from Bush that fake-toughness and limited knowledge on the issues doesn't work.

Barack looked presidential with every word.

McCain attacked and Barack faced him down. Some points went by without being adressed, but that happens in a debate. Barack held his own on many.

Barack brought up McCain's gaffe of not willing to meet the leader of Spain. He poked a few holes in McCain's military exterior.

Barack said many times that he agreed with John, yet it was only the broad topic. Barack went on from there and illuminated how John was wrong on that subject in many minute ways. Because Obama opens with how he agrees, it can be spinned that McCain knows what he's talking about. But people listening now that Barack went on and showed where John was wrong.

The bottom line is Barack accomplished what he needed to, and McCain did not accomplish what he needed to tonight. McCain needed to show he was a foreign policy expert. While he has been around for years, Barack poked a few holes in that image.

Even Pat Buchanan just said Barack counterpunched and stood with him well. He gives points to McCain, which I can see, but Barack did what he needed to tonight.

This is one round. Barack has won the last few weeks. McCain may have gotten this one only on points. The McCain campaign now faces two more debates where McCain is weaker, a VP debate the desperately want to avoid, and an economic bailout that the GOP can't get together on.

Take heart- this is one small night, the Repubs are despised, and all Barack had to do was let people imagine him as president. Now people know he will protect America and that he is a strong person to take on anyone. And the rest of the campaign is Obama's playing field.

3. He kicked ass, he is winning every poll (except Drudge, maybe)
calm down. Take a deep breath. We are going to win this thing.

Read this, which is posted elsewhere here:

What was OBAMA Thinking?
Well, he was thinking of the massive charts he has draped up in every office he walks into, the charts that tell him he has his base PLUS locked up, m and is now fighting for the lion's share of about 7% of undecideds. He was thinking what all the evidence in the world shows, that such undecideds hate fucking politics because of the nastiness and spittle. And he was thinking he can win 4-5% percent of them by keeping his cool and being congenial.

And he's right.

Just like he's been right about the pace of attacks in the ads, despite what the panic mongers in the DU Worry-Brigade would have you believe.
Just like he was right about playing the small forums while the Palin candle burned out, despite what the panic mongers in the DU Worry-Brigade would have you believe.
Just like he was right in his approach to the economic mess, despite what the panic mongers in the DU Worry-Brigade would have you believe.

He was thinking one more thing: he already has your vote, so it doesn't matter fuck all what you think. McCain already has the Freeper vote, so they can flail around and disrupt forums like this and it doesn't matter a fucking bit.

He's looking for 4% out of the 7%. With 5% it's a blow out. And I sure as hell trust his judgment over yours. Unless you can tell me when the last time was that you won statewide office and outlasted the strongest primary challenger in history?

5. He did better than I think a lot of people expected...
He was crisp, concise and never faltered even for a moment.

McCain, on the other hand, did okay. But this was suppose to be his night, foreign policy and Obama more than hold his own...

8. Let me put it this way, Obama is a brilliant man. He is presidential.....
He looked presidential. He acted presidential. He is an amazing man. Intelligent. Can speak on any topic.

He MUST be our next president.

Meanwhile the aging pig was looking at the podium and playing with it while smirking ANGRILY and not once did he look at Obama. It was as if Obama were not worthy of looking at. I suspect if there had been no cameras rolling he might have used a racial derogatory term. The aging pig also made no sense. He got confused as always. When he got confused, he began to attack Obama. Over and over. Making non-sensical comments.

No comparison between the two.

Thank you so much. I went out and bought a six pack. I was worry about the not so brilliant and informed american ppl.. to me this is an ADD nation and would never appreciate Senator Obama's intelligence.

I did get upset at Obama during the debates for not defending himself with the "inexperience crap" from McPrune.

10. Most of the online polls show Obama way ahead.
especially among independents. Obama looked presidential, cool, and hit McCain on a lot of points. McCain looked like a doddering old fart, yelling, "Hey you kids, get off of my lawn!"

11. I thought McCain had memorized his talking points and was out of touch with the debate
To say someone doesn't get something when they clearly explain it better than you do looks shallow and desparate when done repetitively. McCain and Palin are certainly soul mates. They both reiterate the same storys and talking points regardless of question, context or how many times Americans have heard it. There was not a single story and few lines I hadn't heard McCain reiterate at least twice before in stump speeches. Also, McCain looked slouched over and contemptious more like Bob Dole than presidential.

27. Look at it this way ...
... this first debate (of three) was supposed to be McCain's specialty.

Pundits believed McCain was expected to win.

Now, that he has raised the expectations for the next two debates, McCain will fall flat on his face.

29. Obama won marginally
...but this was supposed to be McCain's strong suit. If McCain can't win this one he will get slaughtered in the next two.

Obama is hamstrung on foreign policy by the political need to appear tough and willing to start more wars, and to pander to Israel.

If you want foreign policy arguments that would have WON this debate hands down, you have to go to Cindy Sheehan's website.
