Gay pride fest cancelled in wake of violence

(Sarajevo, Bosnia) Organizers of Bosnia’s first LGBT pride festival have cancelled the event following the beatings of 10 people on the opening night.

At least 10 people were injured when protesters attacked people attending the festival in Sarajevo on Wednesday night. One of the victims, a Danish film producer, is reportedly in serious but stable condition in the hospital. The others received treatment for cuts and bruises and were released.

Q Association leader Svetlana Djurkovic told a hastily arranged news conference late Thursday night that the organization was pulling the plug on the festival, which was to have run through the weekend, because of security concerns. About 50 people attended the opening.

Amnesty International and a number of European Union parliamentarians have criticized Bosnian authorities for failing to provide adequate security at the festival, despite signs there was likely to be violence.

1. This makes me wonder what the LGBT community is like in Wasilla.
If they even have one.

Or, I should say if they are allowed to have one.
