Sarah Palin’s Latest Interview Is Making People Sad

The mood over Sarah Palin is changing. Her political naysayers used to delight in her floundering her way through interviews (okay, that one interview with Charlie Gibson). They enjoyed pointing out her lack of credentials. But her interview with Katie Couric over the past two nights has elicited a different response — like cringing. No longer is there joy in Palin's struggles. Watching her has become like watching one of those hopeless singers trying out for American Idol: First you laugh. Then you laugh some more. Maybe after that you laugh a little bit more. And as the talentless contestant soldiers on, despite the judges' derision, it hits you that this person, despite their best efforts, doesn't even realize that they don't have what it takes. And that makes you kind of sad.

• Alessandra Stanley writes that "in some ways it was the worst" interview Palin has done. The exchange on Russia was "startling," her answer "surprisingly wobbly." While it's "perhaps understandable" that Palin "felt nervous," it still "wasn’t a reassuring performance."

• Howard Kurtz says Palin "struggled at times and appeared less comfortable than" in her interview with Charlie Gibson.

• James Rainey calls Palin "rambling, marginally responsive and even more adrift than during her network debut with ABC’s Charles Gibson." On the bailout, Palin meandered "off in fruitless pursuit of coherence"; on Russia, she didn't have an answer even though "anyone south of the Arctic Circle would have seen question coming."

~snip~
Michael Crowley says the "real story" may be "percolating fear at McCain HQ that Palin's stock may be headed the way of Lehman Brothers." Why else did McCain do an interview with CBS on the same day as Palin unless to overshadow her?

9. Winner!
You're right, moldy couch banana. But, the idea that people are "sad" or saddened by her shame is awesome. She makes us afraid of the consequences of our willful ignorance to the detrimental effects of a culture of individuality, anti-intellectualism, and personal ambition. That's good.

3. The networks keep highlight her foreign experience response --
I think her take on the bailout (even with the help of notes) was far more bizarre.

4. I felt sad, too, when I saw the CBS interview. I think it's the lack of hubris now....
She is seeming aware of her own limitations -- finally -- and that makes the response to her a bit different.

7. Personally I think most people NORTH of the Arctice Circle saw the Russia question coming
There are places where an RF signal can be hard to get, but the folks at high latitude aren't stupid.

IMHO the only folks north of the Arctic circle who didn't see it coming are submerged in submarines and cut-off from knowing that Palin was contemplating answering reporters' questions.

Not at all.

13. Why else did McCain do an interview with CBS on the same day as Palin unless to overshadow her?
And abruptly canceled an appearance with David Letterman in order to do so. And the McCain camp had to know the last minute cancelation would not be welcomed by Letterman, which of course it wasn't.

The McSame camp is in damage control mode now. Serves them right.

This is not a run for "Miss Alaska".

Our lives are at stake and we are being treated by the GOP like this is a reality show game.

15. I am laughing my ass off at her obvious stupidity. And laughing at her supporters.
All those talking heads who gushed early praise. "She's a real game changer!!"

Yeah, she's like the bench warmer who comes into the game in the third quarter, hits two straight shots, then misses 12 in a row the rest of the game.

16. Sad? Wow. With her smarmy mouth and condescension....
I don't feel sad for her.

She's a walking cringe-maker, but she's too stupid to realize she's too stupid for the task at hand. And let's not forget McCain and the GOP hand-selected her. They're even more insane!

Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 01:40 PM by Tarc
in a heartbeat. She's the interviewee who has no idea what to say to a direct "Have you ever had experience with using XYZ in the past?", and kind of rambles around it, giving vague assurances that she does know all about it, but diverges down a tangent after a few sentences. All, of course, to cover up the fact that she has no fucking idea what it is at all, but thinks anything is better than saying "no".

We should have NO PITY for those like Palin and Bush Jr., who have skated through life on slogans, Bibles, and fascistic tendencies. They are a menace to society, not something to be pitied.
