The only people I feel sorry for are true victims. People without power. People without someone to speak out for them and protect them.

Sarah Palin is none of those things.

The only one she's a victim of is herself. I have a real hard time feeling sorry for people who aren't powerless.

47. In her interview with Couric, Palin had moments of pique at having to explain herself
that revealed her to be an Authoritarian. I saw a hard, patronizing edge to many of her answers. In particular, her explanation of why Alaska's proximity to Russia and Canada OF COURSE meant that she had foreign policy experience, were given in a tone of mocking anger.

You're right about her being pitiful and I can even understand your empathy but can't bring myself to share it. Too disturbed by how this personality type is by nature utterly abusive of whatever power they manage to obtain.

49. Actually though there is an interesting angle here. . .
Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 01:22 PM by Spritz57
Sarah Palin is obviously out of her league but instead of attacking her for her obvious deficiencies, thus angering those who support or are empathetic towards her, why not refocus the debate (and the focus of that anger) to those who put her in this position? The McCain campaign has set her up for failure by putting her in this position. Their lack of vetting, by both writing speeches filled with lies and deceptions and demanding she repeatedly stays on script ad nauseum, they have created an untenable position for her. They have treated her terribly, raised her up to be an object of disdain and will eventually destroy her. She has no say in who to speak with, what to say, nor with the myth they created around her. In short she is a victim of the RNC, where apparently they eat their young for the good of John McCain. I think this might resonate with a host constituencies. Just my two cents. . .

65. That kind of reasoning
sounds like it makes sense but what audience are you trying to reach exactly?

Why refocus the debate? Why not go for the jugular, like they ALWAYS do?

Are you afraid we Dems will look too tough on poor little Sarah? (that kind of belittles her as well--I mean she's supposed to be a big girl who can take care of herself, right?)

105. That's precisely my point. . .
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 10:02 AM by Spritz57
There are many ways to "go for the jugular." Sometimes you can be direct and blunt and sometimes you can attempt to be clever and operate on several levels. In this "angle" as I stated, it absolutely posits Sarah Palin is unequivocally out of her element as it calls into question John McCain's reasoning (or lack thereof) of her selection as VP candidate. It goes further though, because truthfully, most of the concerns over her gaffs are always focused upon her as an individual who as a liability to John McCain as an individual. In this scenario, John McCain is the victim in the conservative and MSM articles. By shifting the focus to John McCain and his extremely poor handling of Sarah Palin, the focus is shifted from McCain as victim (e.g. she let him down), to Sarah Palin as the victim (e.g. he let her down). This idea began to germinate as I watched and listened to the MSM on her repetitions of her campaign speech. She doesn't write her speeches, it has been reported the campaign will not allow her to speak to the MSM--she doesn't make those decisions, the myth created around her, gleaned from both their acceptance speeches were written by the campaign, again she is powerless. She has to sell the now debunked lies. I'm not suggesting the course of current exposes' on the VP candidate end, but I am suggesting, in addition, one could make an argument, the campaign and John McCain have bungled this in a way which scapegoats her. When I read conservative pundits calling for her to fall on her sword to save John McCain's candidacy, perhaps a credible response would be to appear somewhat supportive of her as the focus shifts to the campaign's missteps.

Whether accurately or contrived, it is reported constantly she has energized their base. Many people still like her. If this identification is accurate, then use it to vilify the ineptness of Straight Talk Express at her expense. I'm not going soft on her, I see an opening to exploit an obvious avenue. Whether it is a jab, a right cross, or an upper cut, a blow is a blow.

To directly respond to your last sentence, I'm not afraid of looking too tough. I'm suggesting an additional tough line of attack which may resonate with her supporters. If it is true, she is the magnet for John McCain with conservatives, this simply becomes a tactical (or is that strategy? lol) wedge issue to disillusion those supporters who come to their events to hear her and as reported, leave when he begins to speak. In essence demagnetize the magnet for John McCain.

Some years ago, I watched an old community activist on Tony Brown's Journal (I think) describe a tool he uses to explain racism. In a video, he asked for a volunteer from the audience to come forward and balance a cup of water on her head as she knelt and sang the Star Bangled Banner. He then asked the audience for their observations and comments. To a person everyone attacked the young volunteer for her foolish stunt. He then thanked her and as she returned to her seat, he addressed the audience. He said this was an experiential lesson on racism. Everyone attacked the young volunteer and no one attacked him for asking her to submit to this humiliating exercise. As long as he was allowed to remain above the focus (and critical thinking) of the audience, he wins and nothing changes. He said it was American as apple pie to blame the victim. I wondered if this would work so I tried this very exercise with a large group of high school students following an incident in the community. The results were identical. I believe it was Alcott, an American Transcendentalist Writer, who said if you don't think you are brainwashed by societal norms (poetic license here) try singing the Star Spangled Banner to the tune of America the Beautiful.

I say burn the witch at the stake! Feel sorry for her? I want her to suffer for trying to destroy America and if she's too stupid to know then its too damn bad. Maybe some compassion can be felt but only after she's safely back in Alaska as a private nut job.

At the very least, Alaskans need to mount a Recall Petition & & toss her out. She is corrupt & inept. The vetting process of her becoming Gov. must have been almost non existent.

aren't you the same DUer who feels sorry for / corresponds with / certain death row inmates? If I'm right in that, then that would explain how you could feel sorry for her.

(If I've confused you with someone else, I apologize, and if I haven't, I remind you that I really do mean no offense - just making an observation)

89. Absolutely, that's who I am. And proud of it.
I am proud that I can feel pity for even the dirtiest, vilest creatures of this Earth, Sarah Palin included.

I am sorry for you, that your thinking is so black and white, this or that, either or, them or us, with no in-betweens, that you can't feel sorry for this person and the embarrassing position that she often finds herself in (whether of her own, or another's making), while at the same time, fight to keep her out of power.

98. I don't feel sorry for her, however.........
I tip my cap to you for writing to death row inmates. In my view that is a wonderful thing to do. As for Palin, she not only wants to be queen of the world, but seems to almost have a sense of entitlement. I cringed during the Couric interview, but never did I feel sorry for her. She's a very dangerous, take no prisoners politician. I hope she embarrasses the American electorate so much that they overwhelmingly repudiate her ticket on election day.

72. She's coasted on her looks her whole life.
She's done it for so long that she doesn't know it's her looks that got her where she is. That served her well until she was forced to do interviews.

Now she's a household name, and rapidly becoming a world famous punchline. She's seriously screwed, but that's how it should be. If she weren't so dumb she'd be dangerous.

Her unmitigated and glaring stupidity is great for Dems.

76. I'm Starting Too, Also
I mean, good for her to get elected governor. If they like her up there, that's their business.

If you're a politician and get asked to be VP, you take it. Period. Let the top of the ticket worry about the vetting. It's too good an opportunity.

She's completely unprepared for the big time, but I don't think she realizes it. In her more parochical environment, the kind of answers she gives may be considered fine. IMO, it especially shows the influence of her church. You can get by with all kinds of fuzzy answers as long as you nod with everyone else and use the right code words.

She's going through an absolute buzz saw. This is becoming worse than Quayle or the Eagleton situation. It's completely and utterly fair, but McCain's the one that got her into it.

Not to mention, Sarah Palin is giving pretty women a bad name. She is reinforcing all the negative stereotypes about beauty queens and pretty women.

Pretty women are the real losers in this thing. Not to mention she may have set all women back. Damn you moose hunter!!!!

Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 04:50 PM by lunatica
Imagine her accepting the front paws of wolves from hunters to prove they killed one. Imagine her petting the pelt of a grizzly bear she has draped artfully across the back of the couch in her office.

See her signing legislation in Wasila that makes rape victims pay for their medical examination rape kits.

She would gleefully use the pity you feel to help her get exactly what she wants.

that's what I make myself think of when I find myself having pity for her.

She sued the government to take polar bears off the endangered species list. She sold her hometown to corporations and now her own lake is so polluted it doesn't support fish. She made women pay for their own rape kits.

Reserve your sympathy for the people and animals she killed and maimed.

97. "The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth like gentle rain
on the ground below. It is twice blessed. It blesses the one who gives and the one who receives." Shakespeare "The Merchant Of Venice"

The lack of sympathy on DU is sometimes dismaying. It's perfectly honorable to have sympathy even for a declared enemy, and it's not a good thing to become as heartless or remorseless as your enemy in order to defeat a heartless or remorseless enemy (or their footsoldiers, dupes, shills and sycophants).

Just don't let your sympathy lull you into easing up in the battle and doing all you can to defeat her.

Do you feel more sorry for Palin, or for the women who had to pay for their own rape investagations under her administration?
I myself feel sorry for this country having to deal with the likes of Palin and her religious unkindness toward the least among us.
She asked for this. She prayed for it with passion. She did not blink. And you pity her? She who is in a position of power, holds a good deal of wealth, she who is having all of her dreams come true, you pity. And not only do you pity her, you take the time to make that emotion public, for attention. If not for attention, then for what? What is the objective of your announcement of empathy with this vile woman? What do you seek by posting this?
