WASHINGTON - Employees of an oil services firm testified Friday that they spent hundreds of hours remodeling the Alaska cabin of Sen. Ted Stevens — labor that prosecutors say wasn't paid for or reported by the veteran lawmaker.

"We were working 10 hours a day, six days a week," said Roy Dettmer, a VECO Corp. electrician dispatched in 2000 to rewire the home.

Dettmer ... estimated he worked 400 hours on the job at a rate of up to $29 an hour.

Another VECO worker told jurors the company paid him to spend two days installing a $6,000 generator ...

Prosecutors allege that Stevens lied .....

Other witnesses were expected to talk about gifts such as a gas grill, an elaborate rope lighting system, a sled dog and a sweetheart deal on a car.

Construction Workers On Stevens' House Say They Worked For VECO
By Zachary Roth - September 26, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/construction_workers_on_steven.php

At the center of the case against Ted Stevens, the Alaska Republican senator whose trial opened this week, are renovations to his home that the prosecution alleges were paid for by the oil-services contractor VECO.

And today, four construction workers testified that when they worked on Stevens' home, they either worked for VECO or reported to its staffers.

On of the workers testified that Stevens' wife, Catherine, once brought them muffins. On Wednesday, Stevens' defense lawyer seemed to try to shift responsibility onto Catherine Stevens, by claiming that she was the driving force behind the renovations and handled the project's finances.

4. The wife does not have responsibility to answer Senate reports.
This is like saying the dog ate my homework, except a wife is substituted for the dog.

5. Here VE CO again!
Stevens is the poster child for Alaska GOP politics: craven, corrupt, greedy, and brazen.
