Palin Problem
She’s out of her league.

By Kathleen Parker

If at one time women were considered heretical for swimming upstream against feminist orthodoxy, they now face condemnation for swimming downstream — away from Sarah Palin.

To express reservations about her qualifications to be vice president — and possibly president — is to risk being labeled anti-woman.

Or, as I am guilty of charging her early critics, supporting only a certain kind of woman.

Some of the passionately feminist critics of Palin who attacked her personally deserved some of the backlash they received. But circumstances have changed since Palin was introduced as just a hockey mom with lipstick — what a difference a financial crisis makes — and a more complicated picture has emerged.

- snip -

It was fun while it lasted.

Palin’s recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League.

No one hates saying that more than I do. Like so many women, I’ve been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly. I’ve also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Unfortunately, it often does. My cringe reflex is exhausted.

- snip -

What to do?

McCain can’t repudiate his choice for running mate. He not only risks the wrath of the GOP’s unforgiving base, but he invites others to second-guess his executive decision-making ability. Barack Obama faces the same problem with Biden.

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

Do it for your country.

2. Parker is a dim bulb who's blinded by party loyalty
Most other women saw through Palin pretty quickly.

We've all known that type.

8. I don't know how she ever got a column. She's not very bright 'tis true.

I've often referred to her as an idiot. She has well done her part to keep the slaughter of Americans and Iraqis going over the years, among other boneheaded pundit activities.

4. So Palin should simply add another lie to all the others...
and claim she wants to spend more time with her family so she's dropping out?...AND the American public should swallow this? Come on...When did we become such a nation of non thinkers who believe anything put in front of them? Disgusting. She doesn't drop out...McCain loses. She drops out...McCain loses. Case closed.

5. I thought after the Gibson interview she would drop out due to personal reasons
And after the CBS interview, I don't see how they have any other option left. Needless to say, the wingers are in a catch-22, but she is completely out of her league.

6. If there's one person dumber than Sarah Palin, it's Kathleen Parker.
Some of the passionately feminist critics of Palin who attacked her personally deserved some of the backlash they received.

How so?

7. "... she has common sense....."?
I dispute that. She's fucked up her home town as Mayor, leaving it with huge debt.

She's too fucking dumb to teach her kid about sex and/or birth control.

And, she's too fucking dumb to use birth control herself.

Yeah, she's a real paragon of common sense.

10. I agree with most of this assessment, apart from two points.

1) Her early critics were every bit as justified in their skepticism as this conservative is today. They weren't inhibited by her rose colored glasses for a few weeks, that's all. It was clear that Palin was a ditz in a few days if you just watched her on video and read a bit of her record.

2) How the hell does Barack Obama face the same problem with Biden? I think Biden was a perfect choice. Who is embarrassed of Joe Biden?

11. Obama doesn't face the same problem with Biden no matter how much
Parker would like it to be so.

Biden is experienced, competent and qualified for the job.

12. An Earlier Column In The Tribune, By Parker. . .
. . .was openly critical of Palin. So, this isn't a first for her. I don't like her, but she is being consistent.

13. "Barack Obama faces the same problem with Biden. "
Um, no he doesn't.

Nobody is claiming Joe Biden isn't up to the job. To say that Biden and Palin have similar experience levels... that's laughable on it's face.

Palin doesn't fool any woman who's been around a time or two.
