Abuse Hotlines Light Up as Economy Falters
SACRAMENTO, CA - The phones at WEAVE in Sacramento seem to ring constantly. The same is true at My Sister?s House. Both agencies provide aid to victims of domestic violence.
"We?re getting more calls to the crisis line," said WEAVE Executive Director Beth Hassett. "The level of violence is heightened."
Sitra T, a counselor at My Sister?s House, said women are citing financial issues as a more and more common trigger for violence.
"When someone is worried about money, there?s stress and tension and abusers will use this as an excuse for violence," she said.
Joyce Bilyeu spent 10 years in an abusive marriage. She now helps counsel domestic abuse victims. She said money issues often sparked violence in her home.
"Quite often, it would be the excuse, you spent too much money or we don?t have enough money," Bilyeu said.
