Rovian Jujitsu - "Postpone the Debates"
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 03:32 PM by Husb2Sparkly
If Obama gives in to this, he elevates McCain to a credible and honest player.

If Obama doesn't give in to this, he will be charged by the McPalin campaign with being more about his own ambition than being 'for the Amuhrikkin pipple'.

We all know the charge is, of course, pure bullshit. And I'm no longer sure they can make it stick as they once would have been able to do in a heartbeat. But I have no doubt they can make it stick if they work it right.

But that's the game that's being played. How the Obama camp counters this will be very telling - and fascinating to follow.

edit to change "potpone" to "postpone" in the thread title.

1. This isn't Rovian
it's "Schmidtian," who I think is proving himself to be a very poor mans Rove.

4. Nobody's whining.
Nobody's hand wringing.

But you play it as you see it, pal.

(You need to get that vein on your forehead looked at. That thing could cause you an aneurysm.)

14. The master
We didn't stop the campaign or debates in 1812. We didn't stop them in 1864 in the midst of our Civil War, in 1916 before entry into a World War, in 1928 during the beginning of the Great Depression, in 1932 or 36 in the midst of the Depression, etc...

Democracy is about giving the people choice. The Republicans want the President to be chosen in the same way they wanted to the bailout to be voted on. Strictly on emotion, without time for debate, discussion, and clear thinking. No way should Obama back down here. The only people who will buy the whole RW bull is the people who are peddling it. We need to see how each candidate thinks, or in McCain's case, doesn't think about the situation we are in. That is what the Debates are about.

7. You're right. This is rovian. It's as fucking stupid as the 2006 campaign rove engineered
it's the most boneheaded move I've ever seen in presidential politics. Why some of you persist in thinking that every idiot thing the pukes do is a stroke of genius is beyond me. It must be awful to be so easily cowed and scared.

What shirt are you kids wearing to school tomorrow? You always all look so cute I could pinch your rosy little cheeks.

8. Hehehe... JuJitsu is a good comparison.
Specifically Brazilian(not a joke)jujitsu. The basic philosophy of Bjj is hold on, relax, stall, work for position, wait for your opponent to make a mistake. Obama should use Catch wrestlings philosophy of be aggressive, if he leaves something hanging out attack, attack, attack!

9. What a stunt
Obama can't agree with this "postponement" but has to be careful how he does it.

Neither of them are on any committee that is dealing with this, are they ?
I'm sure Obama is being kept informed on the testimony.

He could say that Dodd and Franks are doing all the preliminary work now and there is no need to cancel the date but he would return to DC if he was needed.

16. Obama needs to firmly announce that he will make himself available to
the American people and to the press for open questioning and that if McCain wishes to join him in a bipartisan spirit of cooperation in responding to questions posed by the press during the debates, that's great.

Obama should tell the American people that the election process is the basis of our system. He should remind them that Abraham Lincoln debated for many, many hours with his opponents before being elected to office. He should say that the debates are an integral part of our democratic traditions.

And Obama should show up at the debate site and be prepared to debate. He should now allow McCain to set the agenda or to break the rules. The American people will not respect Obama if he allows McCain to take over and play boss.

Obama has impressed everyone in Congress, even the Republicans with his presidential demeanor. One of the Republican senators even acknowledged Obama's presidential manner in front of Congress today.

McCain should leave the race entirely to Obama if McCain feels that he cannot debate on Friday.

19. This is NOT a catch-22. Obama continues on, acts presidential, and shows up for the debate.
They've gone too far with their antics and it isn't going to work.

23. McCain seems terrified by this upcoming debate.
He is already putting out that Obama is very very good at debating and Obama has stated and I agree with, this is exactly the time when Americans need to hear what their candidates have to say during such a "crisis".

25. The debate is for the American people
A lot of people have remained undecided, and are waiting for the debates. These undecided voters are the people that McCain desperately needs to appeal to, and ducking the debate will only turn them away from him.
