A Polite Rant About The Video Section
I'm not naming any names and I've never created a thread on this topic before. I don't want to embarrass anyone or hurt any feelings.

I just don't understand why some posters decide to post 3, 5 or (fill in the blank) videos back to back to back to back (Again, I'm not singling anyone out here, it happens on a regular basis with a variety of posters)?

The video section is unique in that once a video is off the homepage (you know, no longer in those little video screens) the potential for views, recs and comments plummets. Kicking a video doesn't help, unlike kicking a thread in the other forums...most people don't bother going inside the video section itself, for whatever reason, and they just click on the stuff that catches their eye from the homepage.

At any rate, I'm not making a federal case about this (just in case you were prepared to include something about "whining" in your comment), I just think it's kinda frustrating and not really respectful to others who are more moderate and judicious when posting videos.

2. No offense to anyone....
But I tend to agree with you. As of late, there does seem to be a few OCD posters in that forum.

If there any way to combine so many videos (parts 1-99) into one thread? Just asking.

5. Well, based on my experience and the experience of others...
Anyone who has a decent amount of experience with the video section knows that once the video goes off the homepage it gets a lot less attention, period. If you've had a different experience, feel free to share it.

And we can have a reasonable disagreement without immediately comparing each other to Fox News, etc.

:)

Well, at least I *hope* so.

I guess you might have offended some, I personally can't see why they're so offended.

Your point is fairly put, nobody should give you a hard time for that.

To anybody listening: ihavenobias is a regular and steady contributor to this site. I enjoy his posts all the time. He's a good soldier on the front lines. If you're flaming him for this post, you need to take a break.

I have no idea myself how to post a video but I like looking through the video section. I don't mind a lot of videos esp when some are long but divided up into bits. Does not bother me a bit.

Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 11:28 PM by ihavenobias
You should include the links in one post OR space out the postings. That's my opinion anyway.

By the way, you nailed it when you said you don't post videos...that means you can't relate to the frustration of posting what you think is an important video only to have it wiped off the homepage in a matter of minutes (which again, dramatically reduces the number of people that will see it).

49. I agree
I do often post videos and have noticed the occurances of posters posting 3, 4, 5 or more videos at one time, often a series of the same event.

My suggestion is to LINK subsequent videos in the original thread, rather than posting them seperately with the exception of debate videos on debate night.

9. I can see your point.
Though I am someone who regularly checks the video section, as well as LBN and GDP. Take any poli-sci 101 course and you will understand that media IS the world of politics. Countering their control of the meme is ALL important imho. It is nice to have a place that brings that all together.

That being said there doesn't seem like much can be done about people who place 10 vids at once. Sucks, but nothing against the rules I am afraid. Perhaps the new thread rating system will solve the issue? Hopefully.

As for the name calling in this thread, I am surprised. I won't respond to any of those posts individually, but a name or two has made my ignore list. Ihavenobias, you are integral part of the video section and anyone who can't at least respect you enough to refrain from making personal attacks when you make a suggestion is being unfair. I'll leave it at that.

13. Might I tag my own rant onto your rant?
I've never wanted to start a whole thread about this since it's just a mild annoyance, but you've provided an opportunity for me to post this.

I really cannot stand when people post a video with absolutely no commentary except "Watch this!!"

I have the same complaint about threads with nothing but a link - no comment, no clue as to what it is.

OK, that's my polite rant for the day.

14. Well, it depends on the video title
If it's a good title it'll entice you to watch and it'll be self explanatory.

Me personally, I often fill the message body with a bunch of stuff, but reserve specific commentary until others have weighed in (partly to avoid tainting their perspective).

But of course every link posted should be properly labeled, I agree.

Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 01:16 AM by autorank
Why I don't go to the video thread more often. I watch them when they hit greatest, some of them. But I don't go there. Probably because I'm expecting videos and I see another forum with titles. Who knows. The videos are great and it's a good filter for decent material. I go on YouTube and feel lost amongst the silly crap on their main page. So I appreciate having videos here.

20. Weighing in (260lbs!)
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 06:55 AM by theFrankFactor
Hi guys, Here's the thing; I'm being honest with ya here, there are ten slots on the front page for video posts and as someone who produces his own videos, those ten slots are very valuable slots. I just submit this for your consideration as I know there are no rules about posting videos. DU has and is a tremendous outlet for me and I have been a member (under a different name) for many years- to be able to share my work on this site means a lot to me.

The number of views one can attain from moderate exposure on the front page can be substantial, not to mention beneficial to us all as Dems, for the content it delivers. Tom and I purposefully select and time video posts (not that you have to, just sayin') so as to be efficient. Tom posts for TYT (you can hardly argue the quality!), If he wanted to, since there are NO RULES, he could post videos constantly, all day, every day of the Young Turks! He doesn't. Why? Consideration. I have forty-one videos produced to date- should I start posting those sequentially?

I'm just sayin',
-=Frank

22. Excellent point Frank
I'll probably post a more indepth thread later today because it's been rattling around in my brain for quite some time. Those of us who take the time to do a political video and post it on DU are hardly recognized by the DU community. Imagine if a thousand members at DU were at the ready to rate and comment on your video and can bump it up to the top 100 in YouTube's political forum. Daily Kos made JedReport famous by doing just that. Imagine if DU could do the same for their own artists.

I've made this same complaint before, ihavenobias. There's little regard here for the work DU video artists do and those slots on the front page are precious indeed. It's very selfish, as well as thoughtless to bump someone elses hard work from the front page, only to see Part 1-9 instead. There's no reason why you can't have the 1st part as a new video thread and then post the other 9 links within the body of that thread. It would be much easier to follow instead of eventually seeing them scattered on the front page.

31. Like I said before, if it's more than two parts
I would either space out the postings or including the later links within the first two parts.

It's against proper posting etiquette IMO/IME to post that much stuff back to back to back to back to back for the reasons previously stated.

42. I sent your original post to someone that obviously
did not get the message.

One thing I have observed, is that OCD posters often post duplicate videos or snippets from videos already posted which is against DU rules:

Duplicate Topics and Spamming

Do not post duplicate topics that have already been posted. There are different levels of enforcement in different forums. For example, the Latest Breaking News forum has extremely strict rules against duplicate topics, but the General Discussion forum is much more lenient. Cross posting of duplicates in the two General Discussion forums is not permitted. Cross-posting of duplicates in other forums is occasionally permitted if there is a clear reason for doing so.

Do not spam the message board by posting the same message repeatedly, or by posting a flood of different messages. We have an automatic spam filter which blocks out members who post numerous messages in a short period of time.

I like the Video Forum and do cruise thru there on occasion. Perhaps Skinner et al could update the video forum to include more than 10 on the front page? or post suggestions when posting to the videos as to what to do when there are more than one in a series?

45. I'd like to have those "little video screens" also in the video section.
Or, at least, a screen shot next to the link. I know it's irrational, but somehow I seem to be a person that clicks on a video if there is an image next to it.
I've been to the video section, but it's not as appealing to me as looking at the videos on the main page.

I know it's silly, but I'm just being honest hoping that the video section might get a more attractive appearance.

Seriously, I'm asking.

I'm not an internet producer, I just recognize the unique nature of the video section. I'm not even talking about stern rules, just some mutual respect and understanding.

If it's GD or GDP or whatever, go nuts, go crazy, create 5 back to back threads. It's not the same thing, as I explained in my original post.
