KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A powerful explosion ripped through the Old City section of Kabul on Wednesday morning, killing at least 13 people and injuring 15 others, Kabul's chief of police said.

"There were lots of ambulances taking away lots of casualties," one witness said.

The cause of the blast was not immediately clear. There were reports that the explosion occurred in a shop that sold ammunition.

KABUL (Reuters) - A large explosion occurred at an ammunition shop in the Afghan capital on Wednesday, destroying surrounding shops and killing several people, officials said.

"There are a number of casualties but it's not clear how many," Interior Ministry spokesman Bashari Zarmai said.

Residents had earlier said the blast was caused by a suicide attack on an Afghan army patrol.

Last year, the bloodiest since the Taliban's ouster in 2001, the city was rocked by several suicide attacks that killed dozens.

The Taliban say they will step up suicide attacks across the country this year.
